Allardyce - isn't he an exponent of the 'hoof and chase' strategy? Yes, I can see the type of football under him, unfortunately I can't see any trophies in the cabinet either.
Actually he's not. As a Bolton fan I'd say he knows exactly what his players are capable of and set up a system that plays the %'s Don't forget we had Hierro, Djorkaeff, Gudjonsen and Okocha at the height of our success. They played really neat approach play to get to the area of danger, then the %'s kicked in. Ironically for an ex-Centre Half we did have a habit of conceding daft late goals. West Ham fans have a polarised view of what they are all about but they can't deny he did the job he was hired for. At Newcastle he was exactly what they needed but they wished for something unattainable as is their wont.

When you look at the style, maturity and composure of play of the top nations I think we are a generation away at least from seriously competing (by which I mean Semi Finals and up). For years we have been suffering from 'the fear' in tournaments, it's not about ability on the ball but about confidence, mindset. When things start to go wrong, they just steamroll and we freeze in the brain. It's been compounded by bad management this time for sure, but yet again the latest set of promising players just got a full on dose of 'the fear' last night which has probably scarred them too.
We don't struggle in qualifying because the pressure isn't the same, there's always another game. As soon as the tournament comes though, the memories and visions of failures past (either experienced or seen on TV) come back and are never far from the surface in games. When the experienced heads in games completely lose it, like Rooney yesterday, then it's no wonder the kids start to screw up too.
The next manager needs to be someone not looking for immediate results, but who can start laying foundations so that when the next crop of talent comes through - which it will, the U-21 and U-18 development is getting better - then it isn't immediately indoctrinated in 'the fear'. Keep the youngsters like Rashford in the 18's and 21's until they are fully matured, away from the fire. All those irrecoverably mind fked need to be identified & ditched immediately - pretty much anyone 2 tournaments in I'd say, but then after Iceland it could be almost the whole squad
Allardyce is actually quite a progressive manager (according to him), and his hoof and run style has as much been about pragmatism with limited squads than ideals (again according to him). He might actually be a good shout in a more developmental nurturing role.

Big Sam for England!
Not a bad idea. How much worse could he be? Plus I suspect his ego will make him take it.

Can't disagree with that. Well said. Sadly it will take years and years and maybe 2 maybe 3 tournaments to get youngsters through and mature and gelled. That's starting now, sadly I feel the FA want instant results without the leg work.
Basically, it's never ever going to happen again.
