I’m serious.

And I feel a semi cumming on.

If not more.

"Nothing special"...hehe...they were quite easily the 2nd best team in the world at that point. They had both Riva and Rivera in their side, superstars of the day. In the Semi Final they sat back and every time Germany scored they came out of their shell and quickly replied only to pop back and allow Germany to come onto them - it was a masterclass in the dark art of catenaccio. It took Brazil at their best-ever to overcome it and boy did they.
Letting in 3 goals is not a masterclass in the dark art of catenaccio, far from it.

People talk like a weaker side has never beaten a stronger side.
England are closer to Brazil in quality than Liverpool were to Man City, and they spanked them over 2 legs.

One outfield line-up #eng looking at closely in training is: Walker, Stones, Maguire; Trippier, Henderson, Young; Lingard, Alli; Sterling, Kane. Pickford expected to start v Tunisia on Monday. Rashford back in full training on Friday #WorldCup

No they weren't. We were 2-0 up and cruising. Would have been 3-0 up but Mullery didn't tap it over the line as he didn't want to take the goal off Astle. Then it bobbled at the last second and went wide!

Then Ramsey took off Charlton to save him for the semi we would never reach. Pure arrogance, due to our history.
nono

I was 12 at the time and remember it clearly. Having gone 2-0 down Germany halved the deficit from a Beckenbauer shot that Bonetti should have saved and they then swarmed all over us eventually winning 3-2. Charlton was fatigued having run his socks off and was having less and less impact as the game progressed. If he'd stayed on he wouldn't have been fit enough to play the full 90 minutes of a Semi. Yes, we had a good first half, but once Germany scored it was obvious who was going to ultimately win as we were wilting in the heat.

I also take issue with you thinking we'd have beaten Italy in the Semi. They were the masters of 'Catenaccio' at that time as they demonstrated in the semi-final win over West Germany. It took the greatest international team I've ever seen with the greatest players I've ever seen to overcome them in what was an epic final.
Their first goal was basically the first time Beckenbauer had got free. He was too busy tracking Charlton. We he went off, it freed him up to run the rest of the game.

Italy conceded 3 in the semi and 4 in the final, so "masters of the catenaccio" is being very generous. It was an easily picked padlock. They were nothing special.

Yes, and Tottenham had their last league title trophy stolen by Dick Turpin.

Not really sure about that team. 3 mistakes there for me, Rose, Dier and Rashford should be playing imo, According to my paper this morning both Dier and Rashford are recovering from knocks so maybe thats the reason.

I filled out a predictor yesterday and got us finishing 2nd in the group but getting to the final yikes

Defending and scoring just enough to win is.

Anyway how do you know anything about it, you were 7 years old, Captain Scarlett must have been more of a pull. I was 12 and playing for my secondary school team and was actually staying up very late at night to watch these games - you must have been tucked up in bed surely? hehe

The Dier injury was a bit of a strange one, apparently he wore a strapping on his thigh due to superstition and not because of a reported strain.

Turn that around. You're 60, over the hill, and your brain has turned to mush. I doubt you know what you had for bloody breakfast. Whereas I'm a youthful 55. Sharp as a razor. I'm in a far better position to recall events. hehe

rolleyes What is it with footballers and superstition? How can they let this rubbish cloud their minds? Lord knows there's not that much spare space in there.

Absolutely right. It's all utter nonsense. But I'm a Virgo, and we're sceptical by nature.

Rose should be playing instead of Young on the left, with Rashford instead of Sterling but if he is injured I can understand. Henderson is a better option than Dier in midfield.

Rose instead of young i agree, id play rashford instead of Lingard though and Dier over Henderson better player and more importantly suits the system more as can cover Walker / stones way better than henderson can.
