Ali was dreadful for most of the game, but he looked injured!

Hendo was terrible but did not what he is able to do. He did what it is fair to ask of him.
Terrible? I know I had a few scoops but was in watching a different game?

except he did do more than most, i.e. a better shot on target than Sterling and Alli did all game, plus 4/5 of the best attacking passes
He only passes sideways wink

I thought Hendo played well last night. Certainly upped his performances the last few seasons, and provides that base in our midfield. I think playing with Salah and Mane has improved his attacking play, and often whipped early balls in which is good.

I dont get this constant push by Spurs fans to play Dier. We play 3 CB's, so who cares if he can slot into a back 3/4 if needed? We dont do that for England. Walker is quick and provides cover, and Trippier & Young/Rose provide width.

For me the play needs to sit in central midfield, provide protection to the back four, good engine and workrate. Henderson does that alot better than Dier so thats why he is playing.

I am going a bit leftfield here but maybe because because Hendo plays for Liverpool and Dier plays for Spurs wink

a few of seasons ago I did a bit of FA CPD - part of the course was a video coaching session held by Southgate at St Georges. It was specifically about how to break down a packed defence by passing sideways and backwards, or when Spain do it retaining possession hehe Be patient and wait, at some point a defensive player will make a mistake and lose their man or allows space in behind. The lads he was coaching were, I think u18, and they were too slow at identifying when the ball could be switched from one side to another. Southgate stepped in and took over the say quarter back position. The example I remember the ball was being mucked about with on the left hand side of the box, lots of passes but nothing really happening, the defense had drifted over, Southgate realised that space had opened up on the right and that a player was running into that space, he screamed for the ball and pinged first time left footed pass about 30 yards to the runner to set up a shot at goal. He then looked at the lads and said, "that was what I want you to" do or words to that effect.

anyway...my point above is perhaps why Henderson is playing, he will scream for the ball always holds that position and can play a switched pass. He is also a unti who will break down play. He isn't going to bomb into the box to get on the end of a cross and leave us exposed at the back. We have lots of tricky runners and dribblers, we need a Henderson player.

I'm not Hendo's biggest fan (liverpool fan here) but you can't deny his energy. He'll run himself into the ground & sometimes the team will need that lift. See one player chasing balls like he does & it can have a knock on effect for the rest of the boys on the pitch. Pretty average at best performance last night but the result is all that matters. Footballs coming home!

Sterling. Needs four chances to get one, 21 England games since finding the net. Definitely needs a review, unless he there to confuse the opposition as much as he does me?

Yes lets all agree Southgate should pick his team based on the blinkered Spurs fan opinion with added implicit bias - which has been the theme of the last 10 pages and a repeat of Euro 16. If Spurs players are our last great hope then we are as fked as last time to be honest.

Hopefully, our other oppos in this tournament won't be as cynical as Tunisia were, but one good way to stop the grabbing is for our forwards to be constantly moving and all start from outside the box and all run in together- if you just stand there allowing yourself to be grabbed, it's now not even a sure-fire way to get a penalty as we saw last night.
