We want to win the group now right? In light of Brazil winning tonight and topping their group.
Do we want to go out to brazil in tne quarters or spain in tne semis?
Do we want to face 3 big teams or 2 big teams to win it?

Topping the group is a priority.

If we won our group we'd be in the top half of the draw. That would mean:

Qtr v Brazil
Semi v France/ Argentina / Portugal / Uruguay
Final v Spain

On the bottom half (so as runners up) you'd face:

Qtr v Sweden /Swiss
Semi v Croatia / Spain
Final v Best of top half

Therefore losing has it's advantages.

Tricky.
Belgium are not daft.
They will be fielding a week team and won’t be trying very hard.
We have 1 less booking.
If it is a draw it will go down to fairplay.

I can imagine playing for a draw and trying to get some bookings.
It’s going to be a bizarre game.

Yes rest lots.
Pick up some bookings to non key players.

We actually scored too many goals against panama.
1 less and we could decide who we face.
Bad management?

This debate is getting completely hyped up by the media. Rather than just let him get on with it & be happy with what we can achieve, they need a stick to beat him with if/when we go out.

"He should have made sure we lost the group, sack him!"
"He should have rested the players, sack him!"
"He shouldn't have rested the players, sack him!"

As usual they are getting ready to pile the pressure on the manager and claim they knew best all along instead of just relaxing and enjoying at how much better we are now and being happy with whatever we achieve. I'm not going to predict anything but remember how crap we have been & where we are now but this is rapidly becoming the most open World Cup I can remember and who knows where we could end up. Enjoy it.

And remember we nearly had Fat Sam in charge... yikesyikesyikes

England need to play a strong team with minimal changes to keep the momentum and also prove to themselves they can beat a decent team to progress. Great opportunity to go for it knowing they will still qualify.
Trying to play for second place will be suicidal and I don’t think Southgate will be even thinking of that.
Sweden, Switzerland, Croatia will be up for playing England, as in the end if there is not a good result against Belgium all they will have done is beat Tunisia with an injury time goal and pumped a very poor Panama team.

Think Southgate is the best Manager England have had for a long time, as a Scot I would be rooting for you but Shearer, Wright, Lineker and the media put a stop to that.

All the best.

I don’t care who plays, but let’s just play to win. I (at 52) have not seen enough England wins at knockout stages, I deserve a bit of joy biggrin

Surely, we’re all enjoying it ... I’ll admit to going ballistic when that big German stopper was finally found out ... sweeper keeper my arse. Can’t control a throw in ... imagine if WE were Germany tonight, this thread would have melted ...

We’ll get however far we get. Southgate is no mug so far, so let’s get behind the team ...

The Germans are out, let’s enjoy that fact!

Much of a richness for me
Personally if he rests a few he won't be doing it to get lose he will want to in his eyes keep people fresh
If you win it you have to beat people so finish wherever so long as you're through

Well said. England fans should really just enjoy the ride and hope they smash every team they play!

It is a fantastic World Cup and it's great for them to just be a part of it.

TL:DR

Why do England supporters have the name of the country written on their flag?

Other countries don't do this - do they?

Me too. You can't expect to win this thing without beating 2 or 3 world class sides along the way. Plotting a course to victory that involves playing the lesser lights is futile. Bring on the best...if we want to find out how good we really are and be worthy champions, we need to start beating them in knock-out games.

Belgium won't be fielding Hazard or Lukaku. Great opportunity for England to play attacking wing backs.
