I thought the same too. Not a full on struggle but not as lethal in his prime, but bloody hell he had made Madrid (both) look like 5 star mugs.

He has shown the difference between good players like Hazard, Bale, Griezmann etc, and PROPER world class players.

£100 million seems like a bargain now.

What a man. What a player.

Yep, and he'll have proved himself in 3 major leagues as well, plus his ego as well as talent seems to be able to galvanise the rest of the team and drag them along with him.
That to me is the factor that sets him above Messi. For me there will always be the question mark over Messi because of his clear reluctance to leave Barca and prove its him rather than the club. I think Messi is the more skillful individual, but Ronaldo is the more complete footballer.

Ronaldo is older but I think the stats are fairly equal

I’m in the Messi camp but it’s very close

Ronaldo has now shown his greatness at THREE clubs. Messi has only ever been at Barca which to me puts Ronaldo ahead but it's close.

Messi is more skilful on the ball but Ronaldo is just a better all round footballer imo

I agree with this. He drags teams over the line. We've seen him do it time and time again.

Both Messi and Ronaldo would be in my top 10 footballers of all time but Messi would be above Ronaldo. (In no particular order)

Pele
Maradona (begrudgingly)
Duncan Edwards
Beckenbauer
Puskas
Messi
Ronaldo (Not the fat one)
Maldini
Cruyff
Di Stefano

and missing out
Ronaldo (the fat one)
Platini
Charlton
Zidane
Eusiebo
Best
Matthews
Zico

Shame he's so arrogant, vain and if the rumours are to be believed a bit rapey.

He certainly knows how to kick a ball but he's one of the most dislikable people in sport, and that's saying something.

They're the top two in the world, of that there is no doubt. If I had the chance to see ONE of them play live, then Messi every time ...

Sir Alex Ferguson vs Pep - use the same thought process. If we are talking Messi vs Ronaldo it's Messi for me, but it's impossible to judge them against the top talents of past generations with the st balls they played with, ploughed fields and nil protection.

There's a video doing the rounds of him stopping to have his photo taken with a group of disabled supporters after the rest of his team walked straight past them. It's also worth looking for the video of him visiting a childrens hospital, gives you a bit more of an idea what he's really like.

A very good list but for me Moore would pip Beckenbauer (even Pele said so), Zidane over Messi, and Best over Cruyff.

Fully agree with the Diego grudge.

Matthews is a great inclusion as he changed the game as other greats have but I struggle with Edwards; great as he was for his age and his time he sadly didn't live long enough to prove himself so struggles in this glorious company.

That leaves a space so I would promote Charlton; Beckenbauer said that in the 1966 World Cup Charlton was recognised as the most dangerous English player so his only job was to mark him out of the game.

On my just-miss-out/subs-bench list I would throw in Ronaldinho - sublime skills but not enough all round strengths to make the top table.

If I had to make a team though;

Banks

Maldini
Moore
Beckenbauer

Zidane
Scholes
Charlton

Ronaldo
Maradona
Best
Matthews

Scholes gets the nod for sheer passing ability and the highest praise from probably every other top player.
