No-one is ever going to deny Ronald is an exceptionally gifted athlete and has made himself into a very good footballer, but after all the build-up from Lineker and Ferdinand last night what did he do in the match? He scored two penalties but apart from that did next to nothing, just jogged about a bit upfront 9maybe that’s his role now) and tried a few tricks unsuccessfully and lost the ball through good tackles more often than not.
They could have been knocked out last night and he still win the golden boot, even with penalties that doesn't happen by accident.

I've not seen much of him in recent years but he seemed to be one hell of a presence on the pitch for his team and appears to be a great captain to have in a tournament.

He lost the ball almost every time he had it.

He’s always been a decent pen taker so I agree, he didn’t do a vast amount. The fella they subbed late in the game was far superior.

Seriously!!!!

Scored two goals for a start.

Unbelievable comment.
Not really. Yes, he scored two penalties (as most decent players with a strong mind would have, Shearer etc).

And yes, his presence means a lot to the team.

But other than that, what else did he do? Seriously.

Just jogged about a bit and lost the ball more often than not.

He did, he scored 2 penalties. No doubting his quality, but it hasn’t really shown through in this tournament being honest. No one can out run Fr. Time not even Ronaldo.

He hasn’t shone?

Isn’t he leading the golden boot in a group which also contained Germany and France?

He is the greatest player of all time, he’s 35 or something and still has the ability to totally lift a team.

What’s Mbappe done, or Mason Mount / Phil Foden all are touted as superstars, not even close to Ronaldo.

Ronaldo is one of the Greatest football players of all time with a fantastic work ethic. Some of the things he can do with a ball are amazing and a real pleasure to watch. He can turn any game around in seconds and keeps you glued to the game! Will be a shame when he finally retires! frown Think the naysayers on here are so negative because he can't play for us!!

The fact he is fit as a butchers dog at his age is testament to his professionalism! Long may he play!! smile

The bookies had Ronaldo as 9/1 to be top scorer. I find that hard to believe he will always get goals.

For a number of years, he has been "taking it easy" in the earlier matches in tournaments for both club and country.

At Real, he was sparingly used at the start of the season and was in prime condition for the KO matches in the champions league.

I think we are seeing the same here. He has been told to take it easy

He was told to take it easy whilst playing in the group of death? Sure whatever you say…

Like others have said I don’t think Ronaldo has been particularly great, he’s always been good at scoring penalties but every other time I seen him last night he was getting dispossessed. Think we can cut him some slack though given the opposition he has been playing against.

Group of death with 3 teams going through out of 4 with Hungary in thereconfused

In reality they were going through as 3rd place as long as they didn't get slaughtered by either France or Germany

In these tournaments its all about peaking at the right time.

Ronaldo at 36, still comfortably one of the best players in the world. He's incredible.

In terms of working out how to stop him, Ronaldo must be the most researched player on the planet. I imagine anyone detailed to look after him gets a pretty clear brief on how to handle him. It's the price of excellence.

Somebody should be telling those researchers that all they need to do is not give away penalties.

If you watch any Champions league game with Ronaldo and Messi it’s clear to see who takes the most attention from the opposite team. Every time Messi gets the ball the top teams will have about 5 players bearing down on him. Ronaldo I think is great at luring teams into a false sense of security by doing nothing all game then all of a sudden bam, he’s somehow in the box all alone and gets an easy tap in.

I would imagine you're right, but in this tournament I don't think so, someone like Modric or Bale for sure, close them down and you hobble the team, Ronaldo isn't that now it seems.

Think the odds were more to do with the opponents in the group and when they expected Portugal to go out. If they took England's place in that group, he'd have probably been 3s or 4s/1

He’s a great player - incredible dedication and desire to win. But his diving & play acting is pathetic...

And unfortunately, he’s had to play at the same time as the greatest ever, Messi.

I wouldn't be so bold as to say Messi is definitely better than Ronaldo. Ronaldo has scored more goals and has many more records than Messi does. I think it's hard to say one is better than the other, I'm not sure why there are so many arguments and people getting seemingly annoyed at one calling the other better. They're both very, very good players.

Whilst not an attacker I think Zinedine Zidane was as good as them for a team (except when he headbutts people).

There are so many arguments because people have the biases and preferences which is all well any good. Most people would say that Messi is objectively better in terms of statistics and also general ability. What is Ronaldo better than Messi at in terms footballing ability? Heading the ball and penalties?
Messi is just as good and in my opinion the better goal scorer than Ronaldo yet he’s also a phenomenal playmaker, something Ronaldo isn’t.

Ronaldo has many more records than Messi? According to wiki Messi has around 160 records and Ronaldo around 110.

Club goals they’re just about even despite the fact Ronaldo has been playing for longer (although to be fair has moved around more).

Ronaldo just about beats him in international goals (on goal per game basis) but then again he does get the benefit of playing part time plumbers occasionally.

Messi has higher goals per game ratio in Champions league.

Messi has far more assists it’s not even worth comparing.

Oh and in terms of individual awards:

Ballon d’Or - 5 for Ronaldo 6 for Messi
best FIFA Men’s Player - 2 for Ronaldo 1 for Messi
European Golden shoe - 4 for Ronaldo 6 for Messi
World Cup golden Ball - 0 for Ronaldo 1 for Messi
UEFA player of the year - 4 for Ronaldo 3 for Messi
FIFAPro World XI - 14 times each
Player of the Year (league) - 4 for Ronaldo 6 for Messi.

So yeah statistically they’re pretty close with Messi just having the edge. But how anyone can watch the 2 of them play and think it’s close is beyond me.

Ronaldo is like Gerd Müller, a great prolific goal scorer.

Messi is like a combination Gerd Müller in the sense he is a great politic goal scorer, Maradona (dribbling) and Cruyff (passing).. Only thing that lets Messi down is his lack of leadership ability.
