Women's World Cup 2015

Yes, that's what the guys I was working with said, although they didn't put it quite so politely , it was more of the 'she beat the st out of an ex-boyfriend' comment.
As an aside, it always strikes me as odd that people tend, in the main, to find it acceptable for a woman to commit domestic violence. Had it been a man, I'm sure all the crew I was with would have been calling him unpleasant names, but in this case they seemed to admire her.

Does anyone feel on the back of the World Cup that women's football will go anywhere?
I watched quite a few games, but I can't say that I was impressed with the quality. It's very basic and they just make too many infuriating errors. I did think they would be better than they were after some of the claims.
I'm reading all these comments about people joining in with the success, but it seems an achievement to get over 1000 to go to a top women's league game.
Personally I don't think you can compare the success of the women's team to the men. Some of the teams playing in the Women's tournament were absolutely hopeless.
Would people actually pay to go watch this, or are people making a bigger deal of it than it really is?

Chicken and Egg. It needs more supporters going to get more money to allow women to get better by being able to be full time professionals. Until that happens, it will be slow progress.
The FA gives £10 million a year to the ENTIRETY of women's football. That's one and a half Fabio Capello's.

Although money helps with many things, it doesn't bring success. Just look at all the money in English football and most of the talent has to be bought in from abroad.
Too often people jump on the success of teams or individuals having success at competitions, like the Women's World cup or even the Olympics, but the support dies off shortly afterwards. A lot of people are gloating about the women and comparing it to major sporting achievements. Everyone will have forgotten England's women finishing 3rd in a few weeks.
The lack of quality doesn't make it a significant achievement.
I heard some of the comments that the women's team would give the men a good game. I think junior teams wouldn't have much issues beating those women.
Physical strength will always be an issue, but their complete lack of awareness was frightening. Too many of the players just can't read the game and you can see it a mile off. The skill level was low and just all the really basic mistakes were frustrating. Just how many really stupid penalties were given away with really basic clumsy errors and decisions?
Was there actually a goalkeeper that could actually catch the ball? Most of them were playing with a bar of soap it seemed. Dropping and completely misjudging things was common.
I'm reading all these comments comparing things to massive events, but let's be honest, they aren't on the same page.

Some of the teams that make it thru to the men's world cup finals are absolutely hopeless and should not be there. For example, in the last two world cups, England. I think it's been very watchable, though definitely not anywhere near the level of the mens game.
Would I pay to watch it? No, but if it was on TV I suspect I'd watch it as I tend to watch just about any football that's on.
The one thing that has stood out is the lack of theatrics - seems grown men will throw themselves to the ground screaming at the slightest little touch whilst women won't - I wonder why that might be?

They may not have done a triple roll after every foul but they still went down like a sack of spuds whenever they were breathed on. bhstewie said:

I'd completely disagree with that point. There was loads of diving and most of it was blatantly obvious. They still often got penalties and free kick for it.Would I pay to watch it? No, but if it was on TV I suspect I'd watch it as I tend to watch just about any football that's on.

Having played myself and had a son play at decent non-league level I tried hard to pitch the level of these games but it's difficult because of the lack of strength. Not just on physicality when challenging for the ball but in the power of shots, speed of passes and running with the ball. Certainly as a striker I would have fancied my chances shooting on sight against those goalies as they did seem to have butter fingers. Men's sides like Burnham, Marlow, Maidenhead would easily beat them. bhstewie said:

Definitely a lot of fouls and soft penalties given.I still thought that on the whole there was less fuss from the players though.

You are having a laugh? They wouldn't even see the ball against the Japanese!
Anyway, having watched this world cup (pretty much every game) I don't think you can compare the two. They are different styles of games, in part due to the differences in physicality.

The reason that they are getting compared is after all the statements that have been made by people in and around women's football. It's them who have put themselves on the pedestal and try to pretend their achievements are more significant than the men's game.
Some of the games have been embarrassing. Germany v Ivory Coast springs to mind. I don't think the Ivory Coast players even knew what they were doing. Looks like there is quite a few teams at the tournament that are every bit as bad.
Men's football teams have completely different styles. Chelsea are expected to compete with Barcelona even though they play a different game to each other.
Even the skill level and the ability to read the game there is a massive difference.
How often can you see a player telegraph a through ball and the only people that can't see it is the defence? They don't seem very aware of what's going on around them.
The panel said the other night this was the best standard of goalkeeping they'd ever seen. Every game I've watched there has been countless errors. Goalkeepers keep completely misjudging balls, far too many fumbles, also too often they are too slow to react to shots that aren't travelling anywhere near as fast as the men's game.
Then there's all the clumsy tackles.
The game is so basic. Yes it can still be fun to watch, but from a skill level side of things, they aren't very good.
It's not comparable to the men's game in any way. Not only are the men on a different planet on ability, they also have very serious competition, not the cannon fodder that many of the women's teams are.

I know you're enjoying the WC and you say you can't compare the two (yet you seem to in a lot of your posts where you say this) but you can't honestly believe this!?
As you say you can't ignore physiology. Men are bigger, stronger, faster, more explosive. That's before you get into the intricacies of reading the game etc.
Any of those non-league sides would put double digits past the women while barely breaking a sweat.
