Surely if he doesn't sign a contract now they have to sell him and avoid him leaving for nothing next summer?
Outdated view given the money the Prem clubs now have. See West Brom's treatment of Berahino...Lose his services for a year and then sell him to a rival anyway, after he still refuses to sign a new contract?

If they sell him to a domestic rival they've lost the plot and it will say a lot about the mentality of the club - did they not learn anything from the Van Persie saga?
Yup and the mooted £40mil is just totally the wrong price. If you say finishing Top 4 is worth £25mil you have to believe that having Sanchez in the team makes that much more likely £40mil doesn't look that enticing....and then, of course, if you don't sell him you are strengthening a major top 4 rival/weakening Arsenal to such an extent that it would be much less likely for Arsenal to finish above Man City. At some stage someone has to hold a player to his contract and Arsenal really should unless they get properly stupid money.

In years gone by, West Brom would have 'had' to accept the initial £15m bid from Spurs (particularly after the transfer request) because they couldn't afford to have a disinterested Berahino on the bench and would have needed the money from his sale to buy a replacement. Instead, they were rolling in the Premier League riches and therefore replaced him without needing to sell him to balance the books.
They were going to lose his services either way, but as they didn't need the money in order to replace him they decided to not give in to the player's demands. By the time they sold him to a rival (for more or less the same money they would have got in the first place) it was no great loss to West Brom because he had hardly played over the preceding 1.5 seasons and was a shadow of the player Spurs had tried to buy.
Sanchez is a different situation though, partly because he appears to be a significantly more committed professional than Berahino and would therefore probably still score a ton of goals for Arsenal if he stayed against his wishes, and partly because the impact of letting him go to a direct rival now could easily cost Arsenal a heck of a lot more than the money they will receive for him. Whereas in 12 months time he will be pushing 30 and a year closer to the start of his decline- not to mention there might be other clubs outside the Prem willing to offer him a contract then.
£40-50mil to lose an almost guaranteed 20+ goals and give them to a rival, when that money would make zero difference to Arsenal's transfer activity, makes even less sense than selling Van Persie to United did.
It will probably happen though, it's the Arsenal way.

The only rumours in the press are saying that City won't have any competition from Bayen for Sanchez, as they are reportedly no longer interested.Which if true, means he's likely to stay for another year and see his contract out, or he'll go to City. The club would be mental to sell him to City, but it wouldn't surprise me if they did...!!
Other rumour is that we've also rejected a £6.2m offer from Sampdoria forJack Wilshere. I'd have bitten their hand off at that price....I'm gobsmacked any club has even made an offer for him!
