Absolutely meaningless I appreciate, however I have to say that Aubameyang looked on cracking form. Quality of opposition aside, he just looked very sharp, his shots weren't just hitting the target, they weren't saveable. I'm really excited to see what he can do this year.
Totally agree....in the mire of what went on at Arsenal after Christmas his performance went largely unnoticed...10 goals in 13 games.

Emery is, in theory, taking over a team that massively under performed....if he can even get the squad of last year to perform at something close to ability there's probably a 15 point improvement in terms of finishing PL points total. We even appear to have got our transfer business done early.

He played Reiss Nelson in the correct position too, which was good to see.

What do people think is a realistic goal this season? Significant silverware like the Europa League or would people be happy with just better performances and top four?

Everton went one better. 14 to be precise.

22-0 is some scoreline.

As for this season, not seeing the same mistakes and shortcomings that we've witnessed for the last 10 years. I'd be happy for a decent run on top 4 and anything else will be a bonus. Assuming that everyone is in the squad, fit and available for selection i can't wait to see who we will line up with and how we will line up against Citeh for the first game.

I think a marked improvement would be enough this season. I see Emery's appointment as a long term plan. Top 4 would be great at the same time though, and probably what the board are looking for, as they were with Wenger. If we can finish this season with the feeling we're progressing and the future's bright, then most (sensible) Arsenal fans will be happy with that. We had so many seasons previously where we felt like we were going backwards. There's a lot to be done, its not going to happen quickly.

There's a lot to be done indeed. Can't help thinking that the "clean slate" mentality where 90% of the back room staff seem to have gone as well as Wenger was a very good move.

I think winning the Europa League will be easier than Top 4. Can't see any of Man City, Man U or Liverpool finishing outside the Top 4 which leaves Arsenal competing with Spurs and Chelsea for the fourth place.

I think two seasons minimum to be properly competitive again....I think just working on defending properly as a team will take a long time to sort out.

As a Liverpool fan it feels weird to read other fans say they can't see us finishing outside the top four, after we've spent so many years doing just that. However, it also gives me a nice feeling to be able to agree with you!

I hope you guys do manage to be competitive again soon. Those Spurs lot are far too cocky at the moment!

Oh, I wouldn't worry too much about them. Despite what they say, they're about to enter a period of austerity after their new stadium. I would anticipate a few lean years for them, and possibly some player sales to offset the cost of the stadium. They'll soon be back under their rock.

Be interesting to see how they deal with the start of the season seeing as most of their squad have been at the WC right until the end.

Yeah it certainly looks like 'austerity' what with Kane now on £200k to £300k a week depending on which report you believe and Poch just signing a new contract also on a mega salary. Other contracts are being renewed as I type this.

We won't be hearing the sort of stuff you had to put up with for years after you got your new stadium. TV income, NFL etc have seen to that.

Keep on believing that 'austerity' stuff if you want to though.

You do realise that all the other top six clubs have done that AS WELL as buying in new players?

With the new TV deal there was no way you couldn’t offer bumper new contracts and expect to keep your current squad together.

As much as it pains me to say it, you are correct.

Not only from the POV of the more recent bigger TV incomes, but from the fact that it was a convenient truth perpetuated by the board and Wenger that suited the business plan, on the basis that for years a majority of the fanbase were so deluded/gullible that they believed everything Wenger said and he could do know wrong.

How will we notice the difference? we've been in a period of austerity for about a decade now laugh

If you were offered the job as your national team's manager, I'd argue that you would know is who the [then] manager was?

Wenger said:
Yes, I've had the opportunity numerous times to be France manager. I'm not sure if it was before or after Domenech

Spuds stadium has cost around £1Bn, the Emirates was £390m so the TV deals don't really come into it, yes there's more money around, but Spuds have spent over twice as much. They will be in debt to the tune of around £400m repayable over 5 years. It's going to dent their disposable income, it's not rocket science. We'll see how much it affects them.

"I regret having sacrificed everything I did because I realise I've hurt a lot of people around me. I've neglected a lot of people. I've neglected my family, I've neglected many close ones," Wenger admitted."

I shouldn't think his affair did wonders for his personal life either.
