Right, I was clearly completely full of st. Isn't the first time and won't be the last.

I just read that, and it seems to make a lot of sense. I don't know if everything he's saying is accurate, but if is is then it looks like we really will be able to spend a lot more in the summer even without Kronke's input. It does seem to day that the CL is far more important than I thought it was, so I guess that Europa League win (we can hope, right?) has just become a lot more important to me.

That’s quite an admission to make.
“Arsenal can only afford to loan players during the January transfer window and cannot make permanent signings, says manager Unai Emery.”

Just further compounds the idea that we're not going to spend any money in the summer either. There should be no real difference in our spending power between now and then, or indeed now and for the next number of years. “Arsenal can only afford to loan players during the January transfer window and cannot make permanent signings, says manager Unai Emery.”

Even if we get back into the CL, I think that 'only' adds about €19-25m, and that's if we get out the group. This 'self sustaining' model we're saddled with means I can't see Arsenal ever being able to pay the money needed for a world class player in any position, especially since the Van Dijk transfer has raised the ceiling of what clubs will ask for very very good defenders.
Been my view for some time, and why I laugh at some people's suggestions that the manager is going to be handed a big pot of money in the summer.
Maybe me and my optimistic hat on here but this a decent read on the January money situation.

all the above players were shocking and needed to be dumped. I can’t find a single one of those players where i think ‘big mistake that one’.
Our problems deepened when Fabregas and Van Persie left - what happened after was just window dressing.
The owners of the club are not to blame for the more recent problems we have with the squad - it’s the players themselves and people generally won’t accept that explaination as they want someone to blame.
The new Arsenal starts from May and we just need to hold onto 6th in the interim.
Whether or not Ramsey, Sanchez or Walcott are at Arsenal has no bearing on this, the club deserves better than any of these players.
The issue isn't whether we should have kept them or not, it's the fact that we failed to realise anything like their value when they went. It just doesn't seem to happen at other clubs. Our problems deepened when Fabregas and Van Persie left - what happened after was just window dressing.

but who picked and signed and trained and motivated and rewarded the players = AW Edited by Carl_Manchester on Thursday 10th January 19:22
Who allowed AW to do that = IG
Who allowed IG to do that = SK
IG was a big issue. Kroenke trusted him from his MLS days. mistake. the guy was under-performing allowing below market rate commercial deals and having them fewer in number comparative to our peers. its not pretty but they should have been commercializing the crap out of us like united, Chelsea and Liverpool have done in recent years, official partners everywhere. we've only just started catching up.
it took Josh Kroenke to come over and see the mess that was going on to initiate change.
that's the one small hope i have; that JK increasingly involved with us day to day, and with him wanting to make a mark having been given the responsibility in daddies portfolio of the arsenal, that he will possible ensure we get some investment, or the very least aren't mismanaged for years.
SK trusted the manager and the players to deliver the goods and they did not deliver.
Sometimes things just don’t work out the way you expect and Arsenal is littered with a failed generation of players but at least we put faith in a young squad and tried to bring them through - that strategy is always a bigger gamble.
This time i would expect that young prospects will be combined with known quality in a better way.

I will see your Santos and and raise you a Lucas Perez for £17.1m.
11 League Appearances and 1 Goal.
There are plenty to keep this going. I can't decide which was the worst out of Squillacci, Senderos and Cygan. 11 League Appearances and 1 Goal.
On the Perez stat, Yaya Sanogo has the same number of [league] appearances for Arsenal. No goals. According to Wikipedia he made 20 appearances in total and netted just once (in a European game).
He made Nicklas Bendtner look good.
