Only the bottom two teams have won less games than Arsenal.
Watching MOTD Burley missed a few that should have been goals.
Arteta just doesn't seem like managerial material to me. It's worrying to see Arsenal just slide down the league.
He’s not a magician. He’s got a squad that’s overly reliant on young players and a few players either recovering from long term injuries or with recovering from one.....mostly in defence and I would say crucially both first choice fullbacks who are key players in modern football. The football we played under Emery was the worst a since the mid 80’s....when you think about when Wenger arrived for example....he had a great defence already in situ....he built another but that a was a great foundation. This current side doesn’t have anything like that and a much, much more competitive league. Watching MOTD Burley missed a few that should have been goals.

I'm okay with how Arteta is doing for now. Yes, I'm not seeing the results I want to see as a fan, but I am seeing much better football than under Emery.
Of course, that raises the question that is he going to be playing the sort of Wenger-esque football that we saw in the last few years, often good to look at but not the right results?
I'm looking forward to seeing him after he's had a summer with the players and maybe a few new signings (as if, but I can hope). Fingers crossed we keep above the relegation zone though, I've never really considered it a possibility but we're only about 7 points off it.

42 points behind Liverpool :-/
And likely having to watch them beat the Invincibles 49 match record by end of next month........especially looking at their fixtures list over the next 7-8 PL games......Oh well...........
Despite the run of draws and our league position, I think Arteta has made a good start. We're drawing games we would have lost under Emery, we're looking much more organised and solid too which was massively lacking.
Wins will come with confidence, it's such a crucial thing. We need a couple of decent results on the bounce and I think we'll do ok.

Completely agree.Wins will come with confidence, it's such a crucial thing. We need a couple of decent results on the bounce and I think we'll do ok.
And he's managed it after joining midway through a season, and whilst having to play (for most of his tenure so far) an 18yr old winger at left back, a midfielder at right back, and a season ending injury to Chambers who was looking the most promising CB. All things considered I think the stability and organisation he's brought to the team in that time is quite remarkable. I also think there is still a lot of fitness work to be done for a lot of the players considering the way he wants the team to play- this will probably take until the start of next season in all likelihood.
Offensively I think they are crying out for a more dynamic midfielder who can carry the ball past players and provide both a goal threat and good passing attributes- someone in the mold of Cazorla or Wilshire (minus the injuries), or even Ramsey- rather than the 'pass through the lines' style of Ozil. Willock has the potential but still has a long way to go.
At the minute all of the goal scoring eggs are in the Aubameyang & Lacazette basket, and their current form is leading to predictable results- the midfield has no goal threat whatsoever. I also think they would benefit from having an alternative style of striker to those two- i.e. a Giroud who can hold the ball up and bring the midfield into play.
Whilst the similarities between Aubameyang & Lacazette do make us less reliant on either, there is always the implied need to start them both when fit, which I don't think suits the game plan that Arteta wants to play- and personally I will never be onboard with a supreme 18yrd box poacher playing out wide just because he's quick. A more physical plan-b striker would give the team a different option which I think is necessary in certain games, and would help get the midfield more involved in attacking situations.
Aubameyang & Lacazette worked to an extent under Emery (as far as anything worked) as the team was setup to play more on the counter, using the pace of those forwards (plus Ramsey from midfield) to hit on the break. But in a more possession-based system, the link up play is more important. This will hopefully come with more training, but at the minute we are definitely suffering from the lack of a Giroud type of forward who can relieve pressure in certain games and help get our currently limited midfield more involved too.
Hopefully Pepe will step up in terms of goals too, but I get the feeling he's one of those who still needs a fair bit of work getting the rest of his game up to the levels that Arteta requires of someone playing that position- I would hope next season should see a decent improvement.
All in all I've seen enough to be positive about next season- the rest of this season is about getting the important players back from injury and everyone up to speed with the fitness demands of the new system. Without getting relegated...

We really need a win today, although Arteta has improved the defence not winning games as a result isn’t much of an improvement for me.
If its anything like the Man United game before Christmas (burnley? i cant recall), we might need to play it on the ground as the St.James might be a bit on the breezy side this afternoon, it could cause us all sorts of problems if Newcastle decide to play the long ball and take chances with the ball movement.Cupramax said:

He's made a lot of positive noises during the winter break, so we'll see. Yes, I get that every manager says positive things as that's part of their job, but I have some small hope that given a couple of weeks more of structured training he might start get the players really believing in what he's doing. Should just be tumbleweed given we are the home side. It is raining cats and dogs in London but lack of breeze, at least where i am. Could work in our favour then if the pitch is not too waterlogged and the ball moves quick.
