Still struggling to see what he's done wrong to be honest. Take away the dramatic music and 'journalistic' annotations and he's:

Explained how people do dodgy deals (as opposed to suggesting that he can do them/arrange for them to be done). I would assume that this is widely held knowledge in the game.
Negotiates a deal to get paid £400k by meeting some people in HK, but insists that he'll need to check it with the FA and get their approval
States that he wants nothing to do with any conversations about bungs.

I hold no torch for Allardyce, but clearly this is journalists trying to make a non story into a story because they've spent some time and budget to set it all up isn't it? confused

I'm inclined to agree. I think many are saying 'bye' out of not thinking he was the right appointment, if you step back and look at what's actually happened, there's a lot more to it.

It looks bad as a whole, but he hasn't really said anything as such. I don't think anyone will not question his standards though, and the FA knew full well about his past indiscretions. The thing is whether what was said will be taken as bringing the game into disrepute by the FA which is why they are seeking transcripts, the article does not mention some parts that cover his arse from the video; if so he has only just been appointed and who are the alternatives? (I think there are some for the record, not necessarily British) the other problem is, if he does stay which is entirely possible, our wonderful vulturous media will NOT stop now.

That is why we will never be able to win any major tournament ever again. As soon as a manager takes charge, the media will be on the hunt to bring him down.

It's the way it is and anybody who takes on the job should be well aware of the traps being laid.

I agree. Some of his comments are a bit embarrassing for his employer but this all sounds to me like the journo's trying to whip up a major story where there isn't one, because they've invested a lot of time and money in to it.

He won't get sacked and this will all blow over for him quite quickly.

It's a sting. Not a story. Been in progress for 10 months. No laws broken.

If it was a terrifying and bold infiltration of a kiddy fiddling ring or terrorist then it might have merit but in reality it's a stty stunt involving a man who at the time wasn't even England manager.

Whilst I think the FA need to follow due process, if you're paid £3m a year for the ultimate (in patriotic terms) management job in English football I think you have a duty not to give the press any dirt.

We don't know the details of why he was there, but why was he there? When asked to go meet a bunch of middle eastern businessmen why couldn't "I'm sorry but I'm the newly appointed England manager, I'm paid £3m a year, whatever the offer is I'm not interested" be the answer?
I have to agree with this. Regardless of the technicalities of the rules and caveating his statements with "I'll need to check with the FA", it does seem to suggest at best a colossal lack of judgement on Allerdyce's part.

Legally he has done nothing wrong - but neither did Hoddle when he was sacked (rightly IMO)

Probably 50/50 whether he keeps his job, then...

I'll hope they sack him for it or he resigns. He is a regressive step for any team and a footballing tactical Neanderthal.

But I doubt they'll sack him. Even if you have to ask wtf is he doing meeting such people.

Man paid £3m p/a by the FA tells people he doesn't know, but whom he believes will give him £400k, that important rules set by his employer are easily sidestepped and "not a problem".

Sack him. He's taking the piss.

You can't con an honest man.

This isn't the Telegraph's fault. The only reason they set out to do this was to capture on film what they already knew.

Job done, and they've done us all a service.

Not suggesting anything of the sort. I am commenting on the attitude of people in the game of football who are well versed in the "hidden" economy of the way the game works. The big omission in stopping this activity is the HMRC. They have failed woefully to put a stop to tax evasion and illegal monetary practice in the football world.

If The Telegraph can expose what is going on - that is fine by me.

If Allardyce was dumb enough to not realise that his position as England manager would trigger the press sniffing around, then he is 100% to blame to whatever fate befalls him.

It's not as simple as that. Many not so great teams have done very well in tournaments over the years - teams, that on paper, should be way behind England.

Greece even managed to win the European Championships in 2004.

I would argue that the England side of 1966 was probably not the best team in the world at that time - West Germany, Brazil, Italy and Portugal were all "better" sides on paper back then.

However, England had a number of things working for them - one being home advantage and the other being a manager who was pretty much above reproach and highly respected by his players. They won the World Cup for him, as much as themselves.

This.

How many of us in the real world were so many jobs involve a mandatory 3 months probation period go out and say things so obviously likely to leave us in hot water with our new employer after only 2 months?

Obviously football isn't the real world though so BFS will either keep his job or leave with £6m. banghead
