£75 million!
About £25-30 million of that is the Utd uplift. He is a very good player, but that really is silly money.
Oh well, I am pleased that we have him. He is likely to be an excellent player for us.

Agree though, just what we needed for the league and a good foil for Rashford and Martial to work off. If we are still in for Morata too...
Rooney was bullying established centre halves at 16 years old.
We're unlikely to see the likes of him again.
I wish him all the best. He's been a great servant to the club given us his best years and deserves respect as his career comes to a close.
The overhead against City is one of my favourite moments in football. I was in direct line of sight as he took off and connected, I was up before it hit the net. fking unreal!

£75m is probably about right for Lukaku even if it is a crazy amount of money. He's young, proven he can score goals season after season and has the potential to play many seasons at United.
I think it's great that the club seem as though they aren't holding out for a fee for Rooney despite having a few years left on his contract. Better to not have that as a potential stumbling block and having him as leverage in securing a wanted player.

Loved Rooney and has been a great servent to the game when he burst onto the scene at 16. England and Man United top goal scorer and scored some amazing goals for club and country. We're unlikely to see the likes of him again.

You cannot fault his commitment on the pitch, but he has struggled off it and certainly had his heads turned at times by Agents and wanting bigger and better contracts. Its a shame his body has given up the last few years and its impacted with his performances. He is certainly no longer the player he is and while I love him for everything he has done at United, but now is the best time for a new challenge.

Not completely convinced on Lukaku, he's got loads of ability and knows where the net is but is inconsistent with it. He's still young though and will improve under Jose and being around other top quality players. No hiding for him now and hope he proves me wrong!
Very good scoring record 20+ for the last 3 seasons. Probaly better spending 75m on a proven prem goal scorer, then someone from La Liga who might not fit in. Plus like you say still only 24 so plenty of time for him to get better.

I dont mean for my annoyance at the useless lump that he has become to obscure the fact that he was a fantastic player for us. He is a major part of a lot of my best memories as a Utd fan.I think it is a lesson in giving up before you become an embarrassment. He was an absolutely wonderful player for Utd and deserves enormous credit for his record.
I am probably being too harsh in that we should really blame Mourinho for picking him - if his legs are gone (which they clearly are), there's not a lot he can do about that other than try his best on the pitch (which he of course did). I think managers sometimes are unable to judge a player without reference to his pay packet and/or the player that he used to be.

I remember the first time that he came out and questioned the clubs ambitions, he was bang on. I had been thinking the same for a couple of years prior, the football under SAF had become somewhat stale and the team needed re-investment put into it to avoid underachieving. The club appeased him by giving him assurances that players would be brought in and of course he got a much improved contract. He was let's not forget prepared to leave the club if the club didn't match his ambitions. It may/may not have been about money. I believe it to be the latter. To some this was enough to turn them off him, how had he the audacity to question the club that had given him so much? The fact he is a scouser didn't help I'm sure. But he stayed and remained committed to the team. In my eyes he'll always be a United legend. I for one am sad that it looks like he will be leaving, but he's given his all for 12 years and he's earned the right to play regular first team football. I just hope the decision if he does leave us doesn't come back and bite us on the arse. I'm pretty sure he will be highly motivated if he does move back to Everton!

Agreed on the first part, but how could it bite us in the arse? He will be worse than anyone else that Everton would play in his position. ORD said:

Mourinho has the utmost respect for pro's like Rooney. Of course he was always going to give him a fair chance to perform under him. Maybe those red-tinted glasses have obscured my own perception of Rooney this year at times but I did genuinely believe, as we've seen it before, is that he needs time sometimes to play himself back into form. For whatever reason his season has been somewhat fractured and maybe with a good pre-season, good fitness regime and an injury free run he can perform well enough for his new employer whoever that might be. anniesdad said:

I think if he had decided he was going to reinvent and play as a holding midfielder it might have worked. He is a very good passer of the ball and has that commitment to put himself about a it but he is not disciplined.
The last few years have shown that he doesn't really fit into United's team, and when he does play he slows everything down and makes us very disjointed.
Fantastic player, but unfortunately there is a right time for everyone to move on and I think for Rooney this is the right time.

In a world where Southampton are demanding £70-75m for a centre half? About £25-30 million of that is the Utd uplift. He is a very good player, but that really is silly money.
The football world has gone financially bonkers, but considering current value's, I'd say £75m for Lukaku is an absolute bargain If Kane would cost £150m or more!

You are kidding right? It takes less than a second to score a goal.
You are missing my point. The counterfactual is not Everton playing without anyone in his position (so with 10 men) but that they play someone else who is, in all likelihood, more capable than Rooney. So, even if he does score against Utd, he is not scoring a goal that was made more likely by us moving him on. We could sell Phil Jones and have him score against us. It would still not have been a bad idea to sell him!
