thank god for that, those 4-0's were getting old. 4-1, bit of a howler by the young keeper but at least it gives the Burton fans something to smile about.

Martial looked really sharp, deserved a lot more than the one goal he got really. Lindelof still looks way off the pace though.

Evra and Vidic took quite a while to settle and were then exceptional. Give him some time.

Oh yes, for sure. Not writing him off yet, just a comment on where he's at. Jose is right to ease him in gently - he does look better with the ball at his feet and playing than outright defending which is probably what we were after as none of our other CB's are particularly good ball players.

Not sure he's what we need. Our CBs (apart from Bailly) are bad at defending as well as bad on the ball. We simply need a competent CB. He doesn't look like that so far. He may improve, of course, but the evidence so far is pretty bad.

Yep,he looks a bit st so far, early days so benefit of doubt ,but he's a million miles from being a first choice pick.

Martial is something else though, got as much ability as anyone I have seen ,if he can focus and develop he is going to be something else.

Shaw was st,again first game back so a bit early to judge but so far from games we played ,if we want to win league we need a top quality left back .

His close control and simply the sheer speed of his feet when dribbling is incredible when he's going for it. Some of the touches and tricks last night were as good as I've seen from him, or any of our players, since Ronnie left. Of course last night needs to be qualified by the opposition (I remember Depay had a similar game where he looked amazing against one of the small euro teams we played, Midjytlland maybe), but he looked much more like the player we had in his first season. If he can replicate that kind of performance in the EPL then we are spoilt for choice up front - for all Lukaku's power he can only dream of that kind of technical ability at speed.

Just going back to Lindelof it does have the feel of a signing for the future - Jose's no mug with defenders, he must have seen something in him. I do agree we could have benefitted from a much more orthodox and quality CB to pair with Bailly, but then who is really available? I suspect the idea is with a better shield in front of the CB's in Matic then we can get away with just one ball winner and then a more technical player to get the ball forward quickly. The problem there is that falls down if the technical player cant deal with relatively simple balls in to the box if they are targeted - and currently it looks like he isn't comfortable with that. Give it time though, he will probably turn out fine.

We're in decent shape but a few players need a bit more time to fully bed in. Loads to be positive about with this squad and their current confidence and overall mentality.

On his day Martial is outrageous.

The thing that excites me is their ages

Martial, Lingard, Rashford, Lukaku and Pog all under 25 iirc

Lingard impressed me last night (opposition not withstanding)

I am sure there were quotes from Jose previously saying Lindelof could play in midfield in future, maybe he is being groomed as the Matic/Carrick replacement in a couple of seasons time

We still have Rojo to come back who you would assume will claim his spot next to Bailly if he returns to his previous CB form

Not sure the quality of opposition is relevant in this instance because he has that control and speed whoever he plays against .He's caused many premiership defenders to look clueless.

People always overstate the technical ability of ball-playing CBs. Even the classiest of CBs would generally be very average anywhere else on the pitch. They get huge amounts of space and have the whole team in front of them, so being able to play a decent pass is not a high hurdle.

Rio would never have made it in CM, for example.

I agree completely on the youth - it is really exciting.

Rashford and (sometimes) Martial look capable of being World Class.

Was Martial last year not a fat lump who you should be looking to sell?

Player improves and opinions change....shocker!

Shouldn't you be more focused on what your amazing manager is going to do to stop Leicester doing you for the 2nd time in a week?

A lot of the time, he was very bad and overweight. He's growing up a bit and becoming more consistent. Not sure I ever said we should sell him.
