My point is simple - we have a stadium to build and we need to continue to be financially astute.
Building this stupid new stadium is the least most financially astute thing we've ever contemplated. Bloody daft idea.
Can't agree with you there. A 41000 capacity stadium is not sustainable going forward. It makes far more sense to get a bigger ground, especially as the waiting lists forecast we will easily fill it. It's a short term pain for a long term gain.

Your transfer figures are wrong anyway. Morata was 50m, Bakayoko was (a waste of) 40m Drinkwater was 35m.I can't be bothered to look at the others. That another 17m at least off your number.

But my main point stands - we don't 'blow cash' the way we used to.
Morata was no way £50m...... but I agree my figures were plucked from my (sometimes dodgy) memory.

Even so, look here: https://www.transfermarkt.com/fc-chelsea/transfers...

Still way more than a £20m net spend, more like £60m!

I said £20m per season. That was the number mentioned by the ex Financial Director on the Debate programme the other night. As I (edited in) said, we also make a fair amount by loaning players out and I suspect he may have added that in too.

The days of Chelsea just blowing loads of cash have been gone for the last 5 years.
Are you joking?

In the past 12 months you have bought:

Morata - £67m?
Bakayoko - £45m?
Drinkwater - £38m?
Rudiger - 35m?
Zappacosta - 25m?
Emerson - £20m?
Giroud - £18m?
Barkley - £17m?

So in the region of £265m.

If that's not blowing cash, I don't know what is!
You don't seem to understand the difference between net and gross spend wink

Have look at who we have sold and for how much in the same period and compare that to previous years. Our net spend in the last few seasons has been around £20m per season.
About £180m recouped - so a net spend of around £85m.

Compared to say Spurs at around £15m net spend.

Still a big wad of cash in 12 months!
Seeing as we're talking about recent transfers....

IN:
MORATA 62
BAKAYOKO 40
DRINKWATER 37.9
RUDIGER 35
ZAPPACOSTA 25
EMERSON 20
GIROUD 17
BARKLEY 16.9

£253.8M

OUT:
COSTA 66
MATIC 44.7
AKE 22.8
CUADRADO 20
BEGOVIC 11.5
TRAORE 10
ZOUMA 7.8 LOAN FEE
ATSU 7.5
CHALOBAH 6.3
MUSONDA 2.5 LOAN FEE
BATSHUAYI 1.5 LOAN FEE

£200.6M

NET £53.2M. Not small fry, but compared to income, and looking at the rest of the league for context our big spending days are long gone...

city: 222.7
united: 152.9
everton: 78.8
watford: 65
brighton: 64.6
chelsea: 53.2
huddersfield: 50.89
west brom: 49.15
palace: 44.75
leicester: 40
bournemouth: 34.3
west ham: 32.45
newcastle: 24.9
stoke: 22.56
spurs: 19.4
liverpool: 0.6
arsenal: -3.35
swansea: -8
burnley: -15.96
southampton: -31.1

We may be 6th in the net spend league, but we spent less than £10m more than palace and £35m less than Everton. £100/£170 short of united/city.

The big worry for me is that Conte knows he's o the way out so he will just coast until he gets sacked or the season ends.

I hope he stays long enough for another good kicking from our talented boys.

Was funny to see BCM complaining about Utd resorting to being thugs last night.

Are we accountants or football fans ??

Personally couldn't give a toss how much we or any other club spend. If some team has a load of cash to buy their players, thats their (or their owners business ). I can't remember ever being bothered when Forrest made Trevor Francis signing back in the day for a million quid. We just got on with supporting our team and not dissing other teams spending powers. Leave that for the non-football-fan-accountants to argue over.

.... or the fact that Liverpool owe their success in the 70s and 80s to the Moores family bankrolling them. It is no coincidence that Liverpool did well during the same years Littlewoods did. Of course, there was no internet then and the accounting practices weren't globally scrutinised. They were the original benefactors of the rich owner yet , oddly, they think we invented it.

My guess is when top four looks unlikely. I can't see Roman risking league position whilst a top four finish hangs in the balance.

Think Carlo Ancellotti lives a bit closer to the Bridge so if the decision is based on the commute we should go for him.
