I have both at present but my Mac is pretty old now and way out of date, really needs to have a new battery not a major problem but the operating system is old old.

My Ipad is now playing up, i.e. won’t always charge and sometimes only 50% plus other things.

Now if you were buying new and don’t want two items for cost would you buy a small mac to use or an I pad.
I pad is easier to carry around and use v the Mac and no apps.

Thanks in advance

what model is the Mac, from what year?

Swapping out disk and memory and new OS will give it a new lease of life

Depends on what it is to be used for

For me, iPad Pro, pencil & keyboard would do me

For 'consuming' - browsing, light email - I would say iPad.....
....but if anything needs serious work, proper mac laptop all day. Maybe along with a cheap android-pad if you still need a tablet for light browsing duty!

We have invested heavily in Apple kit over the past 5 or more years.....but I have to say I would consider a Microsoft Surface Pro in your situation.
Apple, whilst still (IMHO) much nicer kit, is not what it was: just the removal of all ports puts me off ever replacing my MBPr !
I'd still be mildly horrified at rediscovering and reliving ancient memories of Microsoft-inspired pain, but I do hear it is a lot better these days.....

What are you using it for?

It is a Mac Book Pro15”
Mac OSX- Version 10.6.8
Processer Speed:-2.53Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo

I would be very interested in any advice of what I can get done to it that would give it a new lease of life.

Thank you.

That must be a 2008/2009 model. Not really worth upgrading as the latest software you can go to is OSX 10.11 - which is already outdated.

Work out what you need the computer for. Maximum portability then an iPad pro can work really well for some. If you need a bit more power and flexibility then another Macbook.

Just spent two tedious months sorting out repairs to my daughters MacBook Pro 13 inch. She was lost without it, had to do everything on an iPhone, so I went silly and bought her a 9.7” iPad a couple of weeks ago.

Now she has the MacBook back she kindly says I can have the iPad to replace my 4 year old Mini. biggrin

Quite nice to use, and the bigger screen is good for my rheumy tired old eyes and clumsy fingers.

Just been trying to transfer all my crap from one iPad to another, really easy, it is Apple.....yes....right....got that......

The scary thing is when ‘syncing’ stuff it appears to have found every bookmark and favourite I have ever had, anywhere, on the iPad, on both desktop computers, on daughters MacBook, and even some from a decade ago that I have not used in ten years! How does that happen?

There is the Apple refurb shop (full warranty as well)
https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/browse/home/speciald...

Non supported items
https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201624

Personally I would be looking to what I want to do with it. I prefer editing photos on the desktop. I do not do any photo editing stuff on the iPad however my iPad is a bit old now and I understand the Pro is very quick for this sort of work.

For carrying around, I see more MacBooks than iPads when people are getting creative or working. Not sure why. Maybe the professional software packages are better than the iPad apps?

For travelling, I just use the iPad but it is games and browsing.

What would be the heaviest bit of work you chuck at it? (without meaning to pry)

My 2010 MBP 13" runs well with a SSD + 8gb ram running latest High Sierra.

depends if you can get that to update though.

Wow - I wouldn't waste money trying to improve one *that* old.....
How about a 13" MBA?
Under a grand (Costco have deals on too if you are, or know, any members) - pretty decent. Not the super-fastest - but I'm guessing you are not performing complex photo manipulation or movie making on it anyway ;-)
Kind of is the best of both worlds in terms of lightness and usability.

Ever seen anybody stand an iPad up on a train table and clatter away on the keyboard doing ‘proper’ work? No, me neither. They are as useless in that respect as when they first came out. hehe

For balancing on your knee to surf, or hold in your hand in bed or an armchair, watching a movie, they are perfect.

To be fair I've never seen anybody doing any proper work with any Apple device or Windows device for that matter on a train.

Seems to be the thing to get out Macbook,Ipad or Laptop and scroll through emails that clearly aren't new and then randomly open documents and close them.

Just so people can see you have said device with you.

I think that is a very pathetic comment from a person who hates Mac products or can’t afford one, in my opinion from a genuine question .
Don’t waste your time replying !
Look at the way that Graphic Artists use mostly Apple Mac products

Well, I think it is a pretty funny comment, & I speak as one who has my Mac out on the train on occasion!!
Apple products are a tad "sniffy" - expensive, 'showy'......but I still think they are better made than any windows units I've seen (& I see a fair few from day to day!).
Like I said before, I'm mad as hell that Apple removed all ports, and I do think they are not quite as solid as they were (s/w wise) compared to 3-4 years back, but I do still rate them.....

Typing this from my MBP...

Firstly you will notice above I commented Apple/Windows! Before that comment I also made a comment about upgrading the hardrive and ram which I have done recently.

Back to the comment about trains though, how many graphic artists work on a train? Majority have 27" iMac sat at a desk to work on.

I went from MacBook to iPad as my secondary device in 2011 and back to a MacBook in 2015, as I find having a full keyboard and operating system more useful for my needs.

I went for the 12" Retina MacBook, which is almost as portable as my old iPad 2.
