looking at some used cars (4-5 ish years old fiats) is it worth lashing out on an extended warranty these days? or is it one of those things that never seems to cover whats broken?

I dont think I have ever coughed for one before, got quoted £425 for 2 years on a 5 year old car by arnold clark

Not in my opinion. At that car model /price point the warranty will have way too many exclusions - wear and tear etc...limits on garage labour charges etc etc...

Put the cash you would have spent on warranty into savings as your repair fund. Add it as you go, say £25-£50 per month.
Use that to do your repairs - with Google, forums, YouTube, eBay etc etc you can really do some very cost effective repairs these days.

Nope, stick £425 under the matress, the chances are if something breaks it won't cover it, if it does cover it there might be an excess or it will only cover a certain percentage, you will also be liable for diagnostics and then they will cap the hourly rate well below the average - usually between £30 and £50 p/hr.
