The chief exec is happy to finish 4th and has spent god knows how long trying to sign Ronaldo or bale etc, refusing the manager funds for the players he actually wAnts ,I mean we didn’t buy perisic because Woodward wouldnt sanction an extra 5m????
Back in May when Woodward told investors that "playing performance doesn’t really have a meaningful impact on what we can do on the commercial size of the business" then i think the writing is on the wall there.

JM has made a number of pointed comments about the business being down to Mr Woodward, he has given his list of 5 a month ago etc, which is also creating the feel that the problems are the board / Ed. Whilst some of that is probably true (Perisic being the best example like you mentioned), it's also the case that the club has spent a huge amount of money on players since Fergie left, and yet we still seem to keep needing more. That's due to lack of coherence in strategy and picking the right targets as much as it is about availability of funds imo - which in turn is due to picking the wrong managers post SAF. JM is picking up the pieces, while still making some of the same mistakes, and on it goes.

We are still a lot better than we have seen in these preseason games though.

The thing that gets me is people talk like we didn't finish 2nd last season

Our best showing in the league for years and only denied by an unbelievable City performance.

Hear people talk now we were trounced by everyone and barely escaped relegation ffs

Yes,we were the second best team in the country last season despite the inconsistency .
The pre season I read nothing into ,didn’t we have a crap pre season when we did the treble ? i am more worried Woodward wants social media stars than the players Jose actually wants .

I just feel the club has been badly run football wise since Gill left.
Winning the league in Ferguson's last season was a anomaly ,getting beat 6-1 by city was more reflective of the issues that were not addressed ,and getting absolutely played off the pArk in two games against Bilbao should have seen a clear out that never happened ,instead we had fergy claiming there was no value in the transfer market but then spending 15m on a tramp.

Ooh, Young talent & he's a united fan supposedly. Also American, which might help in the States, and a RW to boot. He's off to Chelsea while we overpay on Willian, isn't he. That would just about sum it up hehe

Which year? Next year Willian. Years after Pulisic. We can either be short termist or look to build something that will last for years. I know which I would prefer, but I was really only talking in jest - we need a RW so either would be good.

Agree, however we have Chong waiting in the wings, on that basis I'd take Willian

It'll most likely be Bayern for Pulisic anyway - they need to replace Robben and Ribery at some point, and the Bundesliga is like an all you can eat buffet for them.

He inherited a crap team, most of the signings he made improved the team ,but the issue is far bigger than the manager (let’s see that’s 3 managers now who can’t get the best of these (amazing) players ?)

I understand that - I think everyone would agree Fergie outperformed in his last season by winning the league with those players. I was more thinking that Jose has had quite a lot of time and money to be fixing that, and yet quite a lot of his signings (from someone not following each week) don't seem to have improved things too much. Quite a few players sold are actually Jose signings, not the dross from before.

However it seems like some of the issues are down to Woodward - in which case that could explain a lot of the issues. Jose might have issues, but he's generally been a very good manager for winning stuff. If he cannot get the players he wants it could explain some of the stuff going on.

Some truth to that. We do rely to a ridiculous extent on Pogba. We have to be realistic about the (lack of) quality of our other midfielders.
And even more so our defenders. We absolutely have to have defenders who are capable of passing any carrying the ball. The game has changed As players go, this is our biggest problem, and one with Woody needs to help Jose with.

It’s augmented by a defensive philosophy, fear in players, and not playing as a team - which is Jose’s fault.

Lot's of doom and gloom today.

Statistically, Utd were clearly the second best team in the country last year, behind a very good Citeh.

The squad has been improved already, and will be again before the deadline ends.

Sanchez will be like a new player this year too.

Can we get closer to Citeh?

I can't really see any of the teams who finished behind us last year improving past us over the course of a season.

Spurs - done nothing over summer

Liverpool - first 11 strong, no depth beyond. Plenty of 'mercenaries' in the first 11 as well rather than anything home grown.

Chelsea - chaos, better players may leave.

Arsenal - new manager will take time to bed in

I see it as being between Utd & Citeh this year, and we will get closer to them this time around.

Liverpool are much stronger.

Spurs were good last season, no reason to assume they can’t kick on, other than the new stadium.

Arse and Chelsea are going through transition so you’d hope they might struggle a bit.

Second is going to be a “good” result for any of the teams.

Genuinely, a day. Have your hugs and tears of joy then wet the babies head and get back to training. The World Cup boys all managed a swift return within 48 to 72 hours including travel. Martial wants out.
