Im really not sure why Southgate was trying to play it from the back when it was clear from the first 5 mins. everyone was being man marked.

Like other have said Kane once again killed of the game. The whole style of play changed. He drops far too deep. When we needed to strech the field due to the marking.

Silly mistakes and poor substitutions cost us last night.

Exactly this, just not good enough to play that way. Players with no vision, indecisive, nervy passing, easier to knock it back to the goal keeper that make a positive pass forward.

Just get rid of the ball, yes it may come back again but often it does not, nothing wrong with a long ball game.
God, how depressing. There's everything wrong with the long ball game. Most of the time. No team should be so wedded to a philosophy that they can't vary it from time to time. If you spot that a good long ball is on, them play it. It doesn't matter if it's long ball, short ball, square ball, etc. You've got to play the right ball.

Having said that, as a general principle, playing out from the back is the way every successful team in modern football plays. We have got players that can play from the back. Stones is one who can. He does it at Man City. The problem is that at Man City, he had better players in midfield to receive it, turn and play a good pass. Like many England players that play for City, Liverpool, Chelsea....they suffer from the step down to International class. Suddenly the don't have De Bruyne, Silva or Kante moving into space to receive the ball, they have lesser players around them.

Just because players make an error doing the right thing, doesn't mean they have to stop and start doing the wrong thing. I bet Messi gave the ball away plenty as a youngster running at defenders.

If we stick with it we will get better. Remember, it was only 3 years ago, managed by a dinosaur, we got beaten by Iceland. That performance last night was miles better than that, and against far better opposition.

Kane drops deep because our midfield is ineffective in getting the ball and moving on to the forwards.

Genuine question, in what way are you not his biggest fan ? by that you mean you dont rate him or dont like him as a person?

The midfield is the key. They were all standing still, as I think GNev pointed out, so easily marked. VVD was on Kane I think so that’s a pointless long ball. Stones just made the mistake that compounded it all.

because he plays for Liverpool and BCM cannot hide his hatred for Liverpool

(he will try to excuse with some guff about VVD wanting to leave Southampton to greener pastures, without popping round to every Soton fans house for a cup of tea and a chat first)

Plus he laughably said he was "bang average" and now looks a prize plum

I don't particularly like rival team players either, especially the really good ones. It's nothing personal.

A poor midfield cost you last night, as well as the mistakes.

Rice is a good player but right of a midfield three seemed odd - he doesn't normally play there does he?

Delph must have pictures of Southgate shagging Guardiola because how he gets a game for either England or Man City is a mystery.

Barkley had a solid game but isn't the guy to lead you in centre midfield against a team like that.

And Chilwell played better once concussed, he looked seriously out of his depth at left back.

It's such an odd tournament and the lineup matched that - it was neither one thing nor the other.

fair enough, some are like that

I don't like certain players but that is because I think they are unpleasant characters in some way not because of who they play for.

Don't like Chelsea but Hazard seems a decent bloke, as do Kane and Kompany for example

credit to the dutch, they pulled a gem of a result
out of the bag.

England? it is very much a work in progress. more semi finals please.

we seem to be fine with the pressing attacking style in the first halves and then run out of steam and ideas in the 2nd.

I think Ox, Cheek and our wealth of younger talent will be looking to shine in 2020.

i switched off at 2-1 as i felt there was no way in another 90 minutes we'd equalise.

i'm all for playing out from the back and trying to squeeze the opposition up and create space but last night was just terrible terrible play form england.

keeper, left back, centre back, keeper, right back, centre half, keeper - launch, lose posession. omg it was just fking awful.

and this england team has a serious issue if two players selected to start can't start for their home clubs. Stones and Delph. admittedly Delph wasn't terrible but stones jesus he's looked poor for city when he's played in the last part of the season.

giving the ball away, uncertain in posession Sterling under used, kane largely anonymous, i could go on but this was worse than the iceland defeat for me. trully appaling.

You want a genuine answer? One has to be very careful what One says about Liverpool & their players in these threads on here ,

But here goes . He is an extremely good footballer that plays for a football team that I Don’t particularly like very much , he stood in a the way of my football team possibly winning the biggest trophy in our history . There is another reason for not liking him very much but I will not say because I’m currently allowed to post in this thread . I’m sure he’s a great fellow & he speaks very well & I absolutely adore his little pony tail but there is no reason on earth why I should be his biggest fan .

You Liverpool fans seem to think that the rest of the nation is in love with Liverpool football club like the BBC & Talksport are but most fans really have a general dislike for all things Liverpool .

Have you not noticed how many non Liverpool fans don’t post in the Liverpool thread these days ?

Anyway, you did ask biggrin

Fully expecting an no reply mail from info@pistonheads.com

No doubt Adam & Desolate will be along soon to tell me off .

Spot on with all of that Twig
