arguably barkley tried to do too much last night and thus never found a good position.

Not sure what the fuss is about Barkley, he isn't good enough for England or Chelsea imo.

He's lower mid table quality at best, wouldn't get in at Wolves or Watford would he?

Your entitled to your opinion but I reckon you're wrong - He's a fine player, got lots of talent and a good attitude. Fact is he's been amongst Englands best players in their last few games and at Chelsea he's not often first choice but plays quite a bit.
Which of Wolves or Watfords midfielders are good enough to be first choice at Chelsea ?

If Lingard had gone a second later and the 2nd goal hadn't been offside, we might have won that game, and their 2nd and 3rd goals wouldn't have happened. People would be purring about John Stones playing it out from the back, the ball eventually getting to Barclay who played and exquisite thru ball to Lingard.

But VAR ruled it out, the game we watched unfolded and now Stones is the villain and Barclay is hopeless.

I'll say it again for those with footballing amnesia.....3 short years ago we were being tonked by a team from a north Atlantic volcanic outcrop with a population less than the average Primark the weekend before Xmas.

Fun fact, Hazard is the only Chelsea player to out play either Jota, Deulofeu, Mountinho and Doucoure. These four 'lesser' players from Wolves and Watford, statistically, could have put Chelsea into 2nd place if they could have been swapped into the Chelsea first 11 and produced identical performances.

The driving factor as to why Chelsea are so ahead of Wolves and Watford is because Hazard is roughly double or more of everything that any of these players deliver for their teams.

And this is what England are missing, the player that can literally act like a 12th player in the midfield like Hazard, Ronaldo and Messi do and Kante did at Leicester.

This is the problem that has haunted us since Pirlo did a demolition job on England a few moons ago. It is no shame not to have such a player, as these players cannot be trained or created.

I think the easy draw in the World Cup has given some false hope that this is a new dawn with Southgate et al. The two decent teams (Belgium and Croatia) were able to do the business.

But we've subsequently beaten Spain, Croatia, the Netherlands and would probably have been an international final had a really marginal offside goal not been disallowed. This has happened in less than a year. Give it a few more years and we will be better, the team that started on Thursday was effectively England B, not our strongest side remember.

I wouldn’t quite call it England B, there were still hundreds of caps on the pitch hehe this is true. Spurs and Liverpool getting to the final should give those players big boosts both in short term confidence and with the experience they’ve gained, too.

I’m torn between thinking there needs to be a combative and pragmatic plan B for use against the best sides (I mean, Greece won a Euros and Leicester won a PL), and the general belief that the players should be good enough to play through the midfield.

The problem with England on Thursday was that the squad lacked a cohesive formation, based on familiarity. I suspect there was a lack of training time before hand which compounded this (there must've been, bearing in mind several players were in a Champions League final less than a week ago). Gareth Southgate actually has a problem where he has too much choice in some positions and doesn't really know who his best squad is.

I still think Kane is some way off being fully fit and probably shouldn't have played in either the CL final or the NL semis.

England are way, way better than they were even two years ago, and even given this weeks fairly poor performance will feel slightly aggrieved not to have progressed. I'm sure having that late goal disallowed temporarily made their heads go down and gave Netherlands the impetus to push up and go for the win.

Lingard, Delph and Walker should be nowhere near the England team.
