1st win in Italy since 1961, really ?
If I heard right then fair play, esp with 10 men
Yep & that was a Friendly.

Think tonight was our first competitive victory in Italy.

The team was Bobby Charlton, Jimmy Armfield, Bryan Douglas, Jimmy Greaves, Gerry Hitchens, Bobby Robson, Ron Flowers, Mike McNeil, Peter Swan, Ron Springett, Johnny Haynes.
And Twigthewonderkid apparently talent spotted them all as under fives around 1942.

Been a ref against us twice and sent a player off both times.
But was he wrong? Tonight's decision looked about right to me.
So you thought the first card for time wasting was fair?
He wandered over to take the throw in incredibly slowly, picked up the ball, wandered back to the touchline slowly, started edging his way up the line, stopped, edged up a little more..... how much time does he need to take a throw in? And given Rice and Walker had already been booked for timewasting, he should have realised that the ref was clamping down on it and got a move on. Only one person to blame for Shaw's red card and it wasn't the official.

C4 and BBC both had Walker already with a yellow.
That's because they flashed up that Walker had a yellow already on screen, meaning that the analyst at the game marked it for the wrong player. That then goes around the world's stat websites and almost everyone gets it wrong until it's corrected.

Well I'm here for a win and Kane becoming the all time top scorer! It might not have felt great but the result stands. Also, he's not a cheat whatever greygoose says!

I think we got away with one tonight, although I'm delighted with the result of course.
What annoys me is why Southgate picks players who aren't playing for their club sides - Maguire and Phillips especially. The former did his usual "give the ball away then charge after it, ending up out of position" act, which cost us a goal, and the latter was woefully off the pace IMO.

Also, taxi for Maldini?

Anybody else get a sinking feeling when they saw Dier 'warming up' (which in his case would be to a temperature just above freezing) halfway through the second half?

And then leaves them on for the full 90minutes when they're obviously out on their feet!
Despite being bossed for the entire second half, it took him 25minutes to make a single substitution.

I think that Kane is an amazing goal scorer, but he is a natural born cheat/dirty player though for me, but with him being that way it has made him very successful though to be fair. He has always had a great way of conning the refs, and that helps the team get opportunities with free kicks etc in fairness.

The worrying thing for me was how England retreated to their own area with zero challenging outside it, it was like a turkey shoot for the Italians, they really should have equalised at least.

Sounds about right. You definitely only become your club & country's top scorer of all time by being Derren Brown with a pair of Nike Phantoms. jester

Poor Gareth. First win in Italy since 1961, winning against a big team (which apparently he doesn't do), playing his defensive football (yet looking strangely attacking most of the game and leaving two of the best attacking players on the pitch when going down to ten men), starting the campaign with 3 points an away win that no one predicted, yet all the Ron Managers on PH just want to criticise and point out what they would have done better. He's got a win. He literally can't come home with any more points than that.
Had we lost, all the told-you-so's would be in their element, Gareth doesn't win big matches against big teams, etc.
We've won a game no one expected so it will be Italy were poor, etc. etc.
Poor bloke can't win even when he wins!

Talk about a game of two halves! As the match went on, it became more and more like watching Spurs of late (I am a Spud!).

Its funny how harsh we are on our own players doing what Italians and many other nations have been doing for donkeys years. They learned the art of gaming the game a long time ago. No Italian will say that they were not Euro winners because their players fall over and scream at every opportunity.

I think the referee was way over zealous with the yellow cards, its quite normal for a centre back to take a free kick, see nothing, then step away and let another player play a different kind of pass this happens in every game every week. If the ref wanted to have absolute zero tolerance, then he should have booked the Italian right sided player who took about 20 seconds and walked about 20 yards with the ball in his hand in the second half, clearly time wasting, if you applied zero tolerance.

Second half England just went to pieces, I am not sure what Southgate said at half time but it obviously didn't work. The team, as a whole, dropped right back into our own box inviting them on. It was a clear change of tactics.

As a casual observer of football I thought the opposing players had to be 10 metres away when a free kick was taken. There seemed to be numerous occasions when this was not the case in this game.

I'm pleased that some of our players have gone in the direction of "if you can't beat them...then you may as well join them".

I used to get so frustrated when England used to play the honest game years ago, when all the foreigners were playing the dirty/cheating game in comparison.

Its a game of 360 degrees, 22 guys, with fluid positioning (unlike rugby which is more linear and one directional) so yes if you enforced that rule rigidly all the time it would become a bit disjointed. As long as the player standing less than ten yards away doesnt interfere then its fine, generally, but yes for the Rice yellow the guy was literally stood in the line of sight so yes he could quite easily stand there and point at him and not take it till he retreated.

Admittedly Kane is a great striker, but when looking at the stats 18 of them have been from peno’s compared to Rooney who only took ( and scored all of his 7 !). Kane has scored 18 out of 22 peno’s, Rooney 7 out of 7. If only Motty was still around to deliver the stats for us.
Rooney has 46 non-pens from 120 games = 0.38 goals per game
Kane has 36 non-pens from 81 games = 0.44 goals per game

So Kane would have 53 non-pen goals if he played the 120 games that Rooney had (who only scored 46).

Mind you, Greaves scored at a rate of 0.77 per game. So he'd have had 92 in the time Rooney took to score 46....

Maffs eh?

I was going to say Jimmy Greaves was the goal to game king of England. What a record he had.
I think you also have to consider the changing game, Kane plays as the lone striker, lots of stuff fed into just him.
Shearer was often sharing the goals with another striker as a front pairing.

I would still say Shearer as an out and out goal scorer is a better player than Kane.

Fantastic win, absolutely gutted I wasn't successful in getting tickets now.

People moaning about what Kane did, that's why teams win stuff, because of little things like that. For far too long we have be too nice and it shows.
