At first I didn’t think it was a foul, then in slow motion it’s a red with the follow through with studs up like that.

It was a good tackle and he won the ball, but he did catch him with the follow through.

I just give up on this modern game. Takes the ball perfectly and ok he clips the blokes ankle on the follow through but so what? That's football... isn't it? It's 40 years since I played.

The false writhing in agony makes me mad...

I don't understand what players are meant to do now. You take the ball but any contact on the follow through is a foul. Is VvD just let to meant Mertens run on to it and beyond him because sliding in and winning the ball is a foul.

Maybe? I don't know what the rule is exactly. But part of the reason why the modern game is so much more skilled is because you can't just kick skillful players off the ball and breakdown play anymore.

I play hockey where safety is given much higher priority for obvious reasons, the equivalent challenge would be a straight red because you can't make the tackle if you can't do it without endangering the player.

I'm not saying that's how it should be in football, but I can see why it would be a card.

Anyway, starting to look like a good game now.....

There will certainly be a lot more goals/diving/cards if it becomes the norm as if the attacker places their leg in the path of your follow through, you're done.
