Salah up for FIFA World Player of the Year on Monday - which is being held in London.

Who is favourite? Is Modric more deserving this year having won the European Cup and got to the World Cup Final? Quite possibly in my view.

Ronaldo possibly tied with Salah for 2nd place IMO. Thoughts?
I never quite get that. To win stuff it shows you have a decent team around you. So to me it should be about the player, not what they have won that season. They've already been rewarded by getting trophies for winning stuff. So why does it play a part in best player?

8 players may as well be a whole team change.

Personally, I'd give all the non-regular starters a chance. It's not like they are all kids and it gives them some game time. If we don't play them in the League Cup, when are they going to play?

But then I'm not that bothered about the league cup... 4th priority after Prem, ECL & FA Cup.
Exactly it's not as if our next 11 is some ste
It would be good enough for top 8
If they played regularly, but you just need to see teams that swap all the whole squad, and usually there is a bit of a disconnect in playing properly together. Bit like we saw from PSG, although for a different reason. I'm fine to let Klopp choose. League Cup is lowest priority, but it would be good to win something, to avoid the questions that get fired at Poch ("not won a trophy yet").

The winning a trophy thing is a MUST this year. Its not a "nice to have" thing. Klopp HAS to win something this season. Its different from Poch, because nobody expects Spurs to win anything and Poch doesn't expect to win anything with Spurs - his eyes are on using them to showcase him and land one of the plum jobs next time around.

Ive never understood any fan who regards winning silverware a worthless - its not, it never is. The only thing that matters is silverware - it guarantees money comps the next yr, it brings in the sponsorship, it promotes and establishes the brand. Silverware is marketable.

Yes 2-5th in the league is important for Champs League, but if you are challenging for all silverware, you should be in those positions anyway.

We MUST win something this season.

I'd definitely play strongest possible 11 today and then effectively a second 11 for the cup with Henderson as Capt if he doesn't play today.

I guess the reply to that is it is not possible to win all trophies, and you have a much better chance in the ones you focus on if you play a poor squad in others. You just need to see it with Europe - whoever is not in Europe has often been one of the best teams in the League. I'd guess this could be particularly the case for us, since we use so much energy pressing. Could be even more important this year due to the lack of proper break in summer due to the World Cup.

I think the best any fan can ever hope for is that you compete for the trophies; get to finals, in with a shot of the league until the final few games, etc. No team will get over the finish line even from that starting point every single time and no fan should expect to definitely win a trophy in a particular season.

And what if that player is in part central to the success of that team, even apart from winning trophies? I'd like to see Modric win it as he has been a key playmaker for many years without getting the recognition. The forwards who bang in the goals tend to get the glory. Many great players like Iniesta never won it and arguably he was the glue to the many Barca victories over the years.

I reckon Klopp will rest Henderson (given his injury record and the need to protect him) and bring back Keita. Firmino also in for Sturridge.

Klopp injury update. Good new Ox is kicking a ball again.

Klopp said:
“Dejan is close. He looks really fit. He did a lactate test last week so fitness-wise he is – for his situation – on a really OK level,”

“He is not for the squad for the weekend, of course, but we will see how soon we can try to involve him again.”

“Dom trains today, (for the) first time after his concussion. Divock tried yesterday but still when he changes direction is aware of (the injury). I think, maybe, Sunday (will be) his first session with the team.

“Adam gets closer and closer. He’s still doing his rehab work but out on the pitch and all that stuff so he is not too far away from the team, for sure.”

Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has kicked a ball for the first time after knee surgery last April.

“Ox is a different situation but it’s so nice to have Ox around,” added Klopp.

“We are really waiting for him without making pressure on him and we know that it will take a long time but he will always be a very important part of the squad because of the guy he is.

“I have said it a few times, I knew he was a good footballer when we signed him but I could never have imagined what an outstanding person he is. He’s a big miss for us.”
The Ox said:
“It’s going well - very boring, very slow, very long, all the good stuff! But I’m making progress, which is obviously what we need. It’s just a long process and I just keep plugging away, but I’m in good spirits and I’m really positive about it,”.

“You just get into a routine [with] tunnel vision and keep going, setting yourself little goals and little things to achieve.

“I passed the ball the other day, not very well, but I started passing the ball and that was massive for me to be able to kick and know that my knee can kick a ball.

“Even though it was five yards, I’ve started working on stuff like that and it’s little wins like that that keep you going and keep you pushing forward to the next one.”

Xherdan Shaqiri could be used in the Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain role of the midfield 3 today, according to Chris Bascombe.
