I see the Liverpool reserves are struggling somewhat against Villa.
Remember when United were pressurised in to playing in the world club championship in Brazil in 2000?
We were not allowed to field a second string team in the FA cup third round(when we were holders of the fa cup)
How come the rules have changed to let Liverpool field two teams in two competitions simultaneously??
I don’t think we were too chuffed at the situation, we had to play our under 19s/23s against a premiership side. Ridiculous and you’d think they could move a match.Remember when United were pressurised in to playing in the world club championship in Brazil in 2000?

And I don't think we were allowed to drop out or we would have been censured and fined, you were allowed to drop out of the FA cup
They got some experience I guess although a lot of that was picking the ball out the net.

Didn’t we opt out of the FA Cup by choice. I thought we were away for 2 weeks and missed the whole of the Christmas period and first week of Jan, so would have had massive fixture congestion. Remember when United were pressurised in to playing in the world club championship in Brazil in 2000?

The more appropriate one was a rearranged match after 9/11 where we had 2 games in 2 days and we played kids against Arsenal in the EFL Cup and got walloped.

The FA insisted we went, they were pitching for the World Cup. At the time United were accused of destroying the FA Cup by the media. The more appropriate one was a rearranged match after 9/11 where we had 2 games in 2 days and we played kids against Arsenal in the EFL Cup and got walloped.
Liverpool should have been prevented from competing in the league cup this year but that would probably delivered a hammer blow to the competition.

Why? They put a team out and it was probably a far more interesting event and result than if the proper team had turned up and done Villa over 4 nil.Liverpool should have been prevented from competing in the league cup this year but that would probably delivered a hammer blow to the competition.
Utd should have done the same instead of missing the FA cup that time.

United were not given a choice.
That's maybe a slight rewriting of history, AMG. The FA told Utd that if they didn't go to the CWC, it would jeopardise England's chances of securing the 2006 World Cup (oh, the irony!!). Utd reluctantly decided it was better to take flak for failing to take part in the FA Cup than for ruining England's chances of hosting a World Cup.
Still doesn't explain why Utd didn't think outside of the box and offer up a second team like Liverpool did.
Did the FA explicitly forbid it?

Hobson’s choice really. There was a lot of bleating about it at the time. Pressure from both the government and the FA.
I may have been wearing Red tinted glasses. Bit busy this morning. Anyway the scousers got a hiding and immediately started arguing with themselves on here. Which is always amusing to read.
Fielding a young side would have ruined the integrity of the competition was the main complaints at the time iirc.

Why? We’d fielded ridiculously young and inexperienced teams for years in the League Cup and did similar in the FA Cup soon after for the early rounds. Hobson’s choice really. There was a lot of bleating about it at the time. Pressure from both the government and the FA.
