I think Benitez would be a good call
Not sure Hilly, I think his best years are behind him and there’s a lot of baggage going back to his RS days. I’d love Bielsa, it would really ignite the club but it won’t happen, my guess is Nuno and it would be unfair to judge him on his last season at Wolves but he doesn’t excite me. Given what he’s done at The Irons I wouldn’t be surprised to see Moyes back, he still has a home in the NW. Hope not blue. I could live with Nuno as long as he played with out and out wingers DCL would love that, just want to see us press other teams and go at them, if we won 5-4 6-3 most weeks that would do me. As good a manager CA was I cannot remember one game last season where I felt comfortable we would win.
As a Wolves fan, I love Nuno and really wish they didn’t decide to sack him. Very bad move in my opinion.
But, I’m not sure he’d fare anywhere near as well going into Everton.
He excelled at Wolves because absolutely everything suited him and just fell into place. The already considerable Portuguese contingent, the Gestifute/Mendes connection. The fact that he was taking on a team that finished 17th in the Championship, but already had a squad which was clearly capable of much better, just most managers at that level wouldn’t know how to get the best out of them, then adding borderline World Class players to a team playing in the Championship. He had a lot of potential growth to tap into.
The connection he had with the fans and the non-playing staff at the club was phenomenal. He was notoriously shy of speaking to the media and connecting with anyone really prior to coming here, so his spell at the club really changed him in that sense. In fact, it happened within a few months really.
But he was well-connected here and had huge potential growth and was given the tools to do it. His relatively large backroom staff was entirely his own barring a couple of mainstays like the club doctor, but had he not been one of the very best in the business, I’m sure he’d have been replaced too.
As for the style of football it was incredible for 3 years. In the Championship it was clearly too easy, the first two seasons of Premier League was the best football I’ve ever seen at the club by a country mile.
Last season it was a massive come down, but the injuries were ridiculous and it showed the limitations of working with a very small squad (his choice, and it worked perfectly up until then). Also as a club, we seemed to miss the fans more than any other, which was predicted we would before the start of the season. Also the change in formation was partially dictated by injuries and partially due to a plan that was in place, so probably 75% of the football played last season was rubbish, but not really his fault. If a team does successfully snuff out his gameplan though, it can make his usual “good” style look dull.
He was also running on empty personally for much of last season. He openly admitted that COVID really got to him personally and as all of his family live in Portugal and he couldn’t see any of them for months on end during some tough times, you could see the dramatic change in his demeanour.
I love Nuno and would have him back in a heartbeat, but I’m just not sure he’d fare as well elsewhere now. He deserves whatever success he can achieve though.

I watched the Howard Kendal documentary last night. Glory Days. They pass you by.
What a manger.
What a team that was. Hero’s. Warriors. Pissheads, some of them.
Yes, also enjoyed watching that last night. Kendall's Everton of the mid-80's was a terrific side, a real shame they never got to compete in the European Cup as I think they'd have had a great chance of winning that as well. Always think of Southall as one of the best British keepers ever but he seems to have let himself go ever so slightly...! What a manger.

Dunc would not, at least, scamper off at the first opportunity.
Would he do any worse than the last few? I doubt it.
Are there any notable recent successes amongst ex-players being promoted to manager/coach from within a club? Most I can think of (eg Sherwood, Di Matteo) have been dumped fairly soon afterwards. Some have gone away and come back (eg Lampard, Solskjær, Arteta) with a bit more success, but nothing major (the jury's still out on Solskjær).Would he do any worse than the last few? I doubt it.
The question to ask is: would any other Premiership team want them as their manager?
I’m quite pleased we are taking our time and hope it’s down to a genuine reset. So many of my mates want a ‘name’ but I don’t think that’s the solution. Give me Duncan, failing that Potter or Dyche, maybe even Moyes but C I think he’d be mad to leave WHU. I know not many will agree but just think we need a team builder first, tactical ace second.

I think it will be Nuno. It could be a lot worse, and I'd be fairly happy with him. He's like walking out of a night club with a 7 out of 10 going back to yours. We all want a 10 out of 10, but our 10 fked off with a rich bloke. A 7 isn't a bad rebound, things could be a lot worse
Think Nuno has signed for Palace, I like him but not sure he wouldn’t just be another Sliva or Martinez, they just don’t work at Everton. We have our own identity (just like any other club) and I think we now need to align. Moyes was the right type as was Royle, neither had funds, Kendall did have money and look where we ended up. Just my view, but I’m tired of seeing rated continental types being put through the mixer. Gassing Station | Football | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
