The Official Everton thread - Vol 2
Discussion
VAR is an issue but I think it evens out pretty much, however I do think the system needs a proper review. The linesman didn't even flag and there were no Everton players around the ref, while United swarmed him. Something stinks, but I don't see it as anything other than incompetence, there's no way Gilfi on the floor blocked the keeps vision but Gylfi should've been up and out of the way.

Doesn't even itself out if you're traditionally a smaller club, no way. The officiating and the decisions this year have been the worse that I can remember, every week there's another ridiculous decision occur.Leicester Loyal said:

I know there’s a VAR thread running, but I’m not sure it’s a fit up but get where you’re coming from, the system is open to abuse, but any system is. What I can’t fathom from today is that our goal was disallowed for offside, when the ball was deflected off an opposition player and clearly didn’t touch Siggy. I could almost accept it if they said the keepers vision was blocked, but the rulings are a nonsense. Blue62 said:

He didnt know what he disallowed it for , just didnt want to give us the winner, think im as angry as Carlo,
VAR disallowed the goal for offside, official. I think Siggy was fouled but he got his shot away and that’s how it goes. Apparently Chris Grayling is taking over VAR next season so it should all work out fine xBlue62 said:

You think, if a player was passing the ball and he got it away then taken out it would be a free kick all day long.. Was a definate pen for me, weird VAR didn't look at it... Adam B said:
Don’t see the issue with that VAR call to be honest, he is interfering with play by lying between the shot and the keeper. Even if he didn’t touch it he is going to be a distraction.
I'm not to sure it was, he was not clearly blocking his line of site to the ball, he could see the ball very clearly and moved with it. I can't deny my bias, but De Gea was moving to his right to save DCL's shot on goal, he therefore clearly had full sight of the ball, so when Maguire deflected it into the goal the keeper was moving in the wrong direction, no chance of saving it and it should've stood, but I understand it wasn't clear cut. In the ensuing carnage the foul on Siggy was overlooked, plus ca change.
The wider point is VAR, it seems increasingly obvious that ref's are bottling it and deferring any contentious decisions to the VAR ref, a faceless, unaccountable entity, locked somewhere within the bowels of Stockley Park. I genuinely think it's an attempt to diffuse and nullify protest, which is exactly why we shouldn't stand for it. If the referee's went to the touchline to review and make their decision from there then ok, but they are abrogating their responsibility on each and every occasion.

Whats being totally ignored is the fact that the Man U defender actually plays the ball. It isnt a straight deflection into the net, he moves to interfere with the shot and it comes off the inside of his foot and into the net.
therefore, Sigurdson is not offside at all.
