Thankfully the season finishes on Sunday as the boys look devoid of confidence and are running on empty. The young lads have dragged us through most of this season and credit to them but when the chips were down I fail to see any senior players stepping up and grabbing the game by the balls to change the outcome. We got ourselves into contention for a Champions League place only to throw it away. When big performances were required at crucial times we bottled it and failed badly.

Saying that and after the dust settles the season has been an improvement I feel. I'd of took 5th place before the season kicked off.

Aye and with xhaka grenading the team and world class Cedric at right back.

Partey and Tierney injuries had a bigger impact than I thought they would.

Partey and Tierney definitely big losses. I wasn't convinced by Partey for a long time but he seemed to find his form and rhythm and then typically got injured.

Xhaka publicly tearing into the team isn't great, behind closed doors yep...get it all out in the open but not publicly.

However....at the start of the season I would have taken 5th all day long.

Xhaka isn’t wrong but as one usually goes headless chicken under pressure the irony is strong.

Full fat Europa will be good for the team development as Getting battered in champs league not so much. The downside is naturally not as attractive to signing but if they’re that fickle perhaps not for us.

We paid the price for a big clear out and running the core players into the ground or injury, and our medical staff appear to suck either at fitness pre signing or managing recovery. Talking of transfers…

Arsenal have reached an agreement for Sao Paulo's Brazilian winger Marquinhos, 19, in a deal worth 3.5m euros that will last until 2027. (Fabrizio Romano)

But Arsenal's Greece defender Konstantinos Mavropanos, 24, is set to make his loan deal at Stuttgart permanent. (Fabrizio Romano)

Cant argue with any of that. I dont see what value Auba would have been in any of those games. Our younger players simply ran out of gas 2/3 games ago.

Interested in Marquois sigining, seems cheap/decent.

Sounds like an investment for the future rather than drop straight in but given we could just about field a 5-a side team a the moment who knows.

lol, he couldnt be worse the Pepe...that cross field pass Pepe tried was so devoid of intelligence. left two players pelting back to cover. insane.

Avoided posting after the game as probably would've just ranted.

Agree with a lot of comments on the gamble that came with the Jan clear out and replacements not being brought in, the injuries to Partey and KT having a huge impact, and we lost Tomi for a period too. I also thought White and Gabriel looked like they were playing with injuries last night and were not fully fit for sure. However, results have shown that the squad isn't big/good enough and Josh and co cannot ignore that.

I think it was Arseblog that tweeted something along the lines of, better to be in the mix at this stage of the season having meaningful games even if we didn't win them, than to have meaningless games as we have for the last few years.

5th progress and i'd have taken that at the start of the season but still a long, long way to go.

Need to acknowledge that Newcastle were superb - first to the ball and really physical. I didn't think they could keep it up for 90 minutes, but they did. Played with great heart for the club and, in truth, gave a bit of a lesson to some of the Arsenal youngsters.

The January clear out was as much about changing the culture within the team as much as playing numbers....it definitely had an impact having that reduced squad size especially recently but getting rid of some of the "attitude" was it would appear a good thing.

I think one of the problem's Arteta had is that he had a first choice XI and it was very difficult to rotate. The cover for KT and Tommy is manifestly worse and fullback is such a key position. Same with central midfield...Elneny has done very well given his ability but he's a world away from Partey.

I personally think the team has made great strides this season in the PL but you have to say not have Europe and going out of the FA Cup very early helped .

Realistically we're very short of numbers to compete in Europe next year and to get the squad from where it is to be able to think about putting in a competitive performance in CL is asking too much. Europa League is probably a better fit for this squad (with a few crucial additions), the likes of Tavares and Lokonga should start every Europa League game.

A couple of key decisions that I think has part affected the position(s) we find ourselves in now.

1. Arteta playing the 'covid card' when we were due to play Spurs in January, bet he regrets that now.

2. Spurs playing the 'covid card' to get out of the Europa Conference. Great move, got them out of a crappy completion and allowed them to concentrate on the league.

Spurs were handed a 0-3 defeat for failing to complete their fixture due to Covid.

Whereas Arsenal, well, the irony is simply delicious, don't you agree?

In hindsight, building up fixtures because your 'best' players were away backfired with injuries late in the season, especially as Aubameyang was then let go.
Lacazette and Aubameyang weren't scoring freely, top scorer has scored 12? goals, which doesn't help, then all the unrest in the players. Add in the curse of the documentary team.

With all that 5th is pretty decent especially after the worse start in 60plus years. Lost the first 3, hammered by City 5-0
Its just as well for both Spurs and Arsenal that others have also failed to capitalise

LOL, I'm not coming here to bash Arsenal fans, as their team is doing quite enough of that.

But yes, ever so slightly different circumstances.

You do realise megaphone that Conte was very hacked off about the ejection from the ECL? and that our training ground was closed with several players with COVID. And none were at the African Cup of Nations!

Arsenal's behaviour led to a change in the rules because it was deemed unacceptable.

The point you're missing is that while we (Spurs) are still a bit ste, we are a better team than Arsenal. Under Conte we have won more points than Arsenal and Chelsea.

Are you a better team? Questionable. You have two world class forwards that make the difference.
