What does a Captain actually do though?
In a side that wins trophies he's the one who gets to lift the trophy and get in all the pics. Considering we had him and a Newcastle reject in midfield and a striker who doesn't score it's pretty remarkable that we got anywhere really.

Guv's opinion would be easier to agree with if literally anyone involved in the sport who knows what they're talking about shared the same opinion of Hendo.
I've got news for you, lots of people outside your little Liverpool bubble do. jammy-git said:
I'd love to see anything from someone with a credible football background with the opinion that Hendo is bang average and has been carried by the current Liverpool team?
Maybe the bang average bit is part of the reason he's so highly regarded by people in the game.Works on his game great attitude and fitness and the realisation that not everyone can be the star of the show.
Refer to the whole Beckham/scholes/Gerrard/lampard
Every side needs some players doing the boring stuff.
When teams win things these people get recognised, less so when they win nothing.
I'm really not sure why The Guv is so wound up about it.
grits teeth
We had a player in Carrick who I don't think even Utd fans fully appreciated until he was gone, not a flashy player, not a pop star, just does a job, relentlessly, week in week out and such a consistently high level they make it look easy
We came close to signing Henderson and laughed at a bullet dodged, it's less funny now
I don't know enough about his stats to know if he was as good as Carrick or a Kante but I suspect his performances/statistics would surprise some who still think of the player Liverpool signed not the player he has grown into

I'm not but some people are. Thank you for agreeing he isn't actually a very good player and has got plaudits for working really hard and being in the right place at the right time.Works on his game great attitude and fitness and the realisation that not everyone can be the star of the show.

When you win trophies it's those attributes that get you put in the book as a great player.Win stuff work hard and make the most of what you've got.
That's what separates you from the average.

I've watched a few of his Liverpool games, I've also watched quite a few of his England games. I mostly remember him getting panned for most of his England performances and for his Liverpool games, I've never thought wow, there's a player. He works hard it's true but apart from that is pretty forgettable in most games.I can only go on what I've seen and from the general consensus of other non Liverpool fans and yes that includes professional pundits panning him for his England performances, so I'm definitely not alone in being puzzled by the hype from certain quarters over a very average player. If he played for Leicester who have also won 2 major trophies in the last 5 years, he'd never get a mention.

Putting Henderson up there with Gerrard might be the most ridiculous thing I've read on this thread and that takes some going. I can only assume that they must be new fans to the game.
Gerrard is one of the top 5 players to play in the PL Henderson wouldn't even make the top 500
You both seem to be making an argument no Liverpool fan is Gerrard is one of the top 5 players to play in the PL Henderson wouldn't even make the top 500
The poster said that Henderson deserves to be spoken about in his own right rather than in comparison to Gerrard.

He actually said I know there will always be comparisons to Gerrard which is a subtle but important difference to how you've just put it. The poster said that Henderson deserves to be spoken about in his own right rather than in comparison to Gerrard.

Completely agree. No one is saying Henderson is the most talented player in the league, or even our team. But his leadership on the pitch is easy to go unnoticed, but I think him missing from the team this season was a huge part of why we dropped off so much.Ascayman said:

Where the fk have you read that?!Gerrard is one of the top 5 players to play in the PL Henderson wouldn't even make the top 500

Bang average player who has been massively over-hyped for some reason. The fact he won some sort of player of the year award in 2019 was quite frankly laughable when you had the likes of KDB, Vardy, Kane, even Salah or Mane from your own team on fire that year. Would be nowhere near my PL top 20 and would be pretty much anonymous if not for the fact he plays for the media darlings Liverpool.
.....and the decision is...

Also making stuff up as per the above, and "lots of people were panning him in some games" (paraphrase), but not providing any specifics makes you look like you couldn't find any examples of pundits/players that actually agreed with you..

I think calling any player who earns their gold from playing footy at the highest level "average" and "not very good" is laughable, really. They're all elite sportsmen - the "average" at that level is higher than you, me or any here could ever dream of getting near.
I'm not comparing him to you or me, that would be stupid. I'm comparing him to his peers where it's definitely possible to recognise the average players from the really great ones.Gassing Station | Football | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
