Whilst I agree it would be nicer to try to play forward a bit more, what I'm hearing on here is a style of play we had in the Graham Taylor era. Get Carlton Palmer to hit it long for Big Les and hope Platty can get on the end of knock down. That'll work. to all those thinking Southgate keeps changing the team and "doesn't know his best 11" I would suggest he always had a plan to rotate the team during the first 3 games and keep people fit / fresh , so it may look indecisive but maybe it is deliberate.
He had to allow for Maguire and Henderson injuries improving or not.
Like most I am mystified why he doesnt give Kane a rest as he looks leggy

I thoroughly enjoyed the first half.
With England these days you can't really ask for much more than that.
Promising youngsters of 4 or 5 years ago have turned into promising players. Not many of our current squad would have been able to get into the squads of 1998 to around 2010 let alone into the starting 11.
We should be managing our expectations. Premiership players who are English and manage to get some time on the pitch are propped-up by a core of highly talented foreign players.

How many truly enthralling teams win major international championships ? It's usually the team with the best defence that wins,if England fans want england to win something it will be won with lots of pragmatism and little flair.
And you start maguire ahead of mings because maguire can pass the ball.

Oh hell no. Can you imagine the fall out. The team converted to demi gods. Constant TV appearances, saying "of course when we won the Euros" etc for the rest of their/my life. Dear god...please no.Can't we just get to the Semi's and drop out? That'd do.

Yet we won and didn't concede a goal. Meaningless stat is meaninglessness. We saw exactly this in the last world cup. Slow, ponderous team. Did just enough to get out the group and win a couple of knock out rounds against easier teams. Then came unstuck.

Given the wealth of tactical and managerial talent, juat in this thread, let alone the wider country. Its a complete mystery why England don't win every major championship?

We're always informed that new to the PL foreign players struggle with the pace of the PL, so surely we should be playing to that strength.......England should be playing PL football, not trying to play the foreign teams at their own game of slow paced pass it around stuff....which is why we come unstuck when we play the good teams.

Or what is Premier League football?
Cos I've seen a lot of slow, very defensive and counter attacking football in the PL. But not very much high energy, pressing and bombing forward football people keep referring to.

Who won the Premier League? The team that always has over 70% possession and plays patient football. If England tried to play 100mph counter attacking football we simply wouldn’t get enough of the ball, be knackered after 60 minutes from chasing shadows and get picked off.
This obsession with power and pace is the exact reason we don’t produce many cultured, skilled creative players like De Bruyne or Pirlo or Xavi.
