I have a ticket to Wembley next Friday, confirmed as one of the lucky ones still allowed to go, and I'm double jabbed. Don't h8 on me, my bruvvers.
I'm half Scottish, so its a win-win result for me ElectricSoup said:

I didn't realise Scotland have never got past the group stage of a major tournament.
I thought they were pretty decent in the 70's and 80's, Souness, Dalglish etc etc.
Aye, '78 was our biggest chance, we should have at least had a tilt at the semi finals that year. Threw it away on dreadful performances against Iran and Peru, then turned up and murdered the Dutch, but not by enough goals to put us through on goal difference. Archie Gemill's goal in that match, for me, a totally biased indivudual, is the greatest World Cup Finals goal of all time.I thought they were pretty decent in the 70's and 80's, Souness, Dalglish etc etc.
Can't see us breaking the duck this time either. Amazed we're in it at all to be honest.

I was just watching some highlights from Euro 96. One thing that struck me was how old the players look compared with now, even though they were all 20s/30s they look like old men. Is just because of the haircuts or are squads a little bit younger on average now? Or was it just the drinking culture causing premature ageing?

The guy you’ve put up a photo of is Gary McAllister. He was 32 in 1996. That might be why he looks older than a current player who is in his early to mid 20s. Edited by JmatthewB on Thursday 10th June 15:23

Jordan Henderson and Gareth Bale are in their 30s and both look about 10 years younger than McAllister there. Although Henderson probably has a free lifetime supply of Nivea for men which might explain part of the difference.Jamie Redknapp hasn't aged a bit since 1996.

Also I was in the England section of the crowd at Wembley for the Scotland game in Euro '96, I was right behind the goal where McAllister missed the penalty and I was still sat down, head in hands, when Gascoigne did his lobby wonder goal right after that miss. Everyone else of course was stood up around me so I didn't even see it to appreciate the artistry. First thing I saw was him on the floor doing the dentist chair thing. My mate I was with (Welsh) was pulling me up by my shirt shouting "did you fking see that?????"
Christ. I have suffered for my choice. I was there at Wembley too when we won the second play off leg 1-0 after having lost 2-0 at Hampden. Euro 2000, wasn't it?

1996 wasn't quite so bad, but on Twitter there's quite a lot of sharing of images from old Panini Sticker Albums from the 1970s and 1980s and yes, you can make a massive point about it based on that. I'm 36 and you can look at entire squads where the players all looked 10 years older than me and some of them were 15 years+ younger!Edited by JmatthewB on Thursday 10th June 15:23
Then going back another couple of decades, virtually all of the players looked old.

There are some more recent examples. Arjen Robben and Frank Ribery both looked like they were pushing 40 for most of their career. Then going back another couple of decades, virtually all of the players looked old.

They both look youthful compared to the standard back in the day. Here are an example of a few 20-something's from the '70s and '80s.
They were just from a very quick search and I'm sure I could find some more extreme examples given a little more time.

How old was he there? About 27? Edited by JmatthewB on Thursday 10th June 15:23
The hair does Gary no favours but he's just unlucky to look old. Some of my peers look ancient, being completely bald or having white hair along with a bit of podge and a 37 year old can easily look 50.
Edit, just seen 32.
I thought I remembered him playing for us in 05 but that would've made him 41 so I guess not.
