Had my mk5 golf gti for 18 months. Needed or preferred a 5 door for new born duties. Coming from a Renault Sport back ground its a bit different. Capable car and goes well, but not a fun car so to speak.

With the St being popular Is it a tough gig finding a nice one?. Anyone recently bought or sold one that can offer advice.

My other potential choice would be a Megane 250 but prices have shot up.

Appreciate any advice smile

I looked at a good few at dealers but ended up buying privately as I wanted to get a feel for who’d been driving it. A lot of these are abused or heavily modified & quickly returned to standard before being sold.

They're still a cracking steer & well worth a look also worth a look are the:

Peugeot Sport 208 GTI a fraction behind the ST:

Astra GTC VXR a very good steer that's a smidge behind the Megane but a very fun & capable car;

I'd say it'd be worth test driving the two above.

I’ve had my 66 plate ST3 for a year now and still love it.

Definitely a lot of fun. I’d say there are better all rounders and probably alternatives that work better as daily drivers but the Fiesta is built to put a smile on your face. I like that there are no driving modes and faff like that, you just get in it and enjoy it. The ride is predictably firm and the interior quality is typical Ford of that era but none of that really matters when you are blasting down a good B road.

I haven’t looked at prices recently but everything seems expensive now and I imagine they’re no worse than any hot hatch. Mine was a high mileage car with just one owner which had clearly spent a lot of its time on the motorway so nice easy miles. It was fairly cheap compared to low mileage examples and I have no regrets. They are tough little cars and last week it sailed through its MOT with no problems. People do drive them hard but they are designed to take it so as long as there are no signs of severe abuse I wouldn’t worry.

The Astra GTC VXR does look very good value. It has 100bhp more than the Ford and you don’t see as many around. Also a good choice.

You shouldn’t have too much trouble finding a good one providing your budget is enough. There are plenty out there.

I bought mine 6 months ago, and I love it. Yes the ride is firm (but Michelin pilot sports helped with that massively), the interior is ok but not great. (The seats are great though) Not an awful lot of room in the back, but you can fit 2 adults in there.

None of that matters though because it’s a riot to drive. The way it covers ground on twisty B roads never fails to makes me grin and it’s pretty cheap to run too. Cheap tax, 39mpg and if you want a bit more power there are some good remap options.

Budget wise, 7k ish. Do you guys worry about theft. I know every hot hatch comes in that territory but these do or did have a reputation to be gone in 60 seconds

I do worry about theft, more so than other cars I’ve had.

Disc lock is quite a good investment and although it took some getting used to having to take it off on put it on it’s fine now and worth the effort. You can also relocate the obd port quite easily. If you have keyless entry like me then keys go in a faraday pouch overnight. I guess if someone wants it then that’s that but you do what you can.

Like Chris I use a disclok, and put my keys in a faraday pouch. OBD is relocated too. None of these are big issues. More Vw’s and Mercs go missing in my neck of the woods than fiestas, so I guess the risk is there with any desirable car really.

For 7k you should be able to pick up a nice one I would have thought if you buy privately. St2 spec is a good pick, st1 is quite basic and st3 usually commands a higher price for not much really (in my opinion).

They are pretty bullet proof cars so the only things to look for are past history (has it been in an accident and repaired? Plenty have) and good service history. A few modified cars are put back to standard and then sold on, so look out for signs of that.

Very early cars needed a recall to sort out the header tank but most should have been done by now. The motor is strong and can take tuning well but I have noticed recently on fb/forums a few people are blowing engines when running higher states of tune - if you get one and fancy a bit more power go with well known tuners, Collins seem to have the best reputation for solid reliability. 240bhp is easily attainable with an induction kit, remap and better intercooler.

Overall they are fantastic cars, and I reckon in years to come when most have been written off or disappeared in the latest scrappage scheme the good ones that are left will be desirable. I see mine as a modern day version of the 205gti (I had a few back in the day and would another).

I just had a look on AT and 7k seems to be about the starting point for a clean, early ST2. There are a few that look okay to me so it should be possible.
