Just out of curiosity I do wonder what level of men's team would be needed to beat the England women.
Well a under 15 boys team (USA based) beat the American women's world cup team by a high margin. I would say an under 18’s england boys team would smash the lionesses. WY86 said:

That’s in a country where more women then men play the game and they have the top women’s side - if anything you would expect it to be more skewed in England

Women’s sport doesn’t have to be similar levels to the men’s game to be enjoyable - tennis is a good example, the top women are mid male university level but it works as it’s competitive and enjoyable to watch
If you allow trans players to switch out of being mid tier at best in the male game to play in women’s events that would ruin the sport IMO as they are winning primarily due to the massive advantage from their male origins
My view, football is struggling as if you don’t care about the event enough (eg it’s the World Cup) most people find the men’s game far more enjoyable to watch with the speed and technical control of the game - same reason people prefer to watch champions league games to division 1 if you are not supporting a particular side

Disagree abou the tennis, the womens game is drearily slow, they don't run for a ball anything like the mens game. My wife watches the mens but can't be bothered with the womens matches as they're boring.
Based on the viewing figures for this years finals that the BBC have released it would appear many others feel the same.SWoll said:

Issue with woman's tennis is the stupid grunting. I can't remember which player it was this year but she was screaming so loudly every point - to ridiculous levelsI'm also still surprised the females got the rules changed about 10 years ago so they now get paid the same amount as the men ... despite the fact the men play 5 sets.
But of course, they want equal rights... just not [i]exactly[/u] equal in workload

just watching the Brazil vs Panama game.
It's just like watching Brazil.
Great fast inter-passing.
And great long range shots from outside the box.
Thats one thing I don't really see in the ladies game. The shots, are mainly not on the hard side.
Though when they do hit a long range shot and it goes in most of the time it has an air of fluke to it. The women's game reminds me of playing pinball a lot less control than the men's game.just watching the Brazil vs Panama game.

But that third goal scored by Brazil. As a team goal.
I would put it up against any team goal scored in the last mens World Cup tournament .
Lovely goal.

I agree, with the pinball less control. And I would say speed.

It was a great goal, though i would say International football is more important to the women's game than it is the men's, i bet 99% of premier league clubs would prefer their players not to go to international duty. But that third goal scored by Brazil. As a team goal.

Ooof this thread is all over the place, although I do agree with some points.
It's clear the women's game has a way to go, especially the gulf in talent between the top and the bottom. It's like putting the premier league clubs in at the start of the FA Cup. I also totally agree on the weird lack of male commentary etc.
That said I agree it doesn't have to be the same level (in fact women's sport rarely is) as the men's game to be enjoyable. I've been to quite a few WSL games, and 5 or so Women's FA Cup Finals and the games have always been enjoyable, not to mention the quality has come on leaps in the last 15 years.

The lovely ball from defence, the step over, the flick, the dummy, the back pass, the roof of the net.
Great team goal.

Not true. Sure, there a disadvantages, mainly injury, but there are big advantages, like value increase and exposure, especially in tournaments. Michael Owen went to the '98 WC a £5m highly rated teenager, came back a £20m superstar. Those were the days when a £15m increase in the value of your asset was a big deal. WY86 said:

Watched some of the Italy v Argentina match this morning, just like the mens game, Italy a bit more classy, Argentina a bit dirty in their game.
Wasn't a bad game from what I saw. Lacked goals.
Agree with above about power of the shots at goal - have said the same myself earlier up the page.
