Best of luck to JRod after his move to WBA.

He was great for Saints before that horrendous injury - energy, workrate, some cracking goals (loved the one at Fulham from SRL's long pass).

But his crock against Man City was so cruel - an innocuous enough jump with an unchallenged awkward landing. Not only did it scupper his England chances, he just hasn't been the same player since.

If the £15m being bandied around is correct, that is a pretty good bit of business for Saints.

Come on chaps.
Why would Freddie and Sir Les both say that we do not need to sell our top players and that this summer we will not be selling our top players ?
For the club then to do the opposite !!
It would make both of them a laughing stock as well as our club.
In the instance of VvD he will be worth £50 mill+ next season as well as this.
As for players showing their loyalty to clubs, that is a joke. All players these days are just mercenary scum, happy to move on to who is paying the largest filthy lucre !
Lets face it most of us will still be here when players have gone, managers and owners have had enough.
Premier league or Conference I will always be a Saints fan. Players and owners are people that form part of the journey.
Forget the individuals get behind SFC.
Loyalty from players is something that gets mentioned too much.
To them the clubs they play for are employers. Just like you and I have employers. And if someone wants to pay you loads more for the same job would you stay with your employer?
Remember most join from another club.
All we can ask for is that they play 100% while they are at the club.

VVD is being offered too much money in wages by other clubs, I'd expect he'd want to take it, and, there's no point keeping a player against his will!
He's not interested in the wages, not about the money at all.

Yup, he wants to be at a club that is passionate about football and for a manager who is passionate about it too.

i still think he's going to be at Liverpool

Out of interest chaps, where would you rate VVD along side , Baily (utd) and the 2 Tottenham boys

I went on record as saying before injury he was by far the best CB in the league - others disagree as you can imagine.

He and Alderwiereld are the two best CB in the league by a mile imo.

He dominates the box and gets those around him organised.

eta: plus Company when he's fully fit.

I had him ahead of him due to his pace and Ariel ability - far superior at both

I doubt there is anything in the pace thing.

Toby also is better at reading the game, barely concedes fouls, doesn't get booked, chips in with goals, has better passing etc.

I'll concede reading of the game but I'd disagree re distribution, unless TA has improved drastically since he was at St Marys I'd rate them equal.

Virgil also scores more goals, his career average is twice as good as Toby.

Can't really comment, but his distribution for Spurs has been top quality. Switching play or hitting long passes into Alli and Kane (not lumps into the channel, but actually picking out a run).

You are discussing this with fans who have watched them both over a full season (every game) surely that stands up more than your opinion on VVD based on the odd game you have seen here and there?

Not sure this is completely true & Toby hasn't had the career boosting figures that come with 3 seasons playing for Celtic against zero opposition.

If he was as great as the scouters are making out he would already be at one of the big clubs.

I'd take Toby over him all day long.

Of course you would he is your player that's a given
But in here both have been Southampton players so there points kinda get listened to a lot more .

It's like taking the option of someone who has test driven a car over someone who has owned it for a year

How many full saints games did you genuinely watch ? Me I was about 6 last year not massive which is why I would ask for their option on him

I'd have them both! VvD is the better out-and-out defender. TA is probably the better footballer.

ANyway, back to being pedantic, wink for the same team, Southampton.

VvD : 7 goals in 68 apps
TA : 1 goal in 28 apps

Toby was still playing for Saints at 26, same age as VvD is now.

Oh ok that's fair enough , i was looking at their whole career stats rather than just the Saints one.

I think the difference is that it's just the huge price tag that is attached to the player, if he was going for say £20M i think the transfer would be a great one, but £70M is just madness. I don't blame Southampton or Liverpool for this, it's just the way it is i guess.

Both top quality and each have benefits (and very few flaws).

VVD is one of those rare players though that, on his best days, can make it look like he's a fully grown adult playing against kids (see Yaya Toure). Does it make him necessarily 'better' than Toby A? Possibly not but it's good fun!

With greatest respect to Liverpool I don't understand why the very highest clubs (Madrid, Barca, Juve) aren't being linked. He's a good footballer, good defender and has that star quality.

And it's a crying shame that as Saints fans we are used to the long protracted sale of our best players but heh, that's the reality for 95% of teams.

I've seen most games TA & VvD played for Saints, plus many of those TA has played for Spurs.

van Dijk all day long for me - the guy oozes class in all departments and, what's more, he makes it look effortless.

Och, what do I know anyway. I think Hibs are the best team ever...

I do agree £70M is daft, but then I remember Man C paid £50M for Stones who defends about as well as my Gran (and she's dead).

Nope, it's about the money 100%!
