Do you know what?

I reckon one season in the Championship is a price worth paying to keep Rafa.

A proper coach of his calibre at our club is the biggest positive I can remember since Sir Bobby. If as seems the case that he's got proper managerial control as part of the deal all to the good.

Hopefully, the real issues at the club, boardroom and owner, can be addressed in due time, but at least the footballing side can move forward.

Absolutely delighted with this.

Echo the above.
It's properly exciting.
A genuine chance to rebuild, create a legacy, and become absolutely adored.

I too can echo those comments.

It's a "get in at the ground floor" moment to my eyes.

Truly excited to see what happens when he starts forming his team and hoping one or two of the potential want-aways decides to stay on and be part of it.

Could the Championship see 50k+ crowds next season on the back of it?

He needs a solid spine in the team from the outset. It'll be difficult to attract players to play in the Championship though but they might look at the bigger picture. It is an absolute coup to keep him at the club though and I'm delighted he's chosen to stay. Like its been said, maybe he fancies something different after the pressure cooker positions he's had where fans have been straight on his back.
Looking forward to next season, bring on Burton!

biggrin Has mass hysteria broken out here? Legacy, statues, fans not on managers back, unpressurised.
Let's just have a look. Out of the 9 games that mattered he managed 2 wins, along the way failing to beat Norwich, Villa and SAFC, he should've kept you up quite comfortably.
To get out the championship you could need to average 2 points per game it isn't as easy as some fans and media think it is, and the way the aforementiond people are going on you're giving every other team in that league the best team talk ever.
I saw some deluded soul saying "Straight back up, then finish top 8 and win a trophy" Yes that's the same NUFC who haven't won a trophy for 60 years.

To paraphrase yourself Mr Ellroy. fk off man. He'd signed a 3 year contract anyway so if you'd stopped up he would've left?
NUFC the only team ever to win relegation biggrinbiggrin

I knew I'd missed something off my last post.

fk off Ray.

P.s. I'd rather the championship and Rafa than any league and fat sam's brand of entertainment. You were two dodgy referees and an injury to Defoe from relegation and you know it. That ain't changing anytime soon, another relegation fight for your sorry lot next year.

This article pretty much sums up the way I feel about our current situation, couldn't care less what nonsense people like ray like to spout about it.

We are relegated and it's the most positive I've felt about nufc in a decade, sunderland stayed up but I bet their fans can't say the same.

Nonsense you say?

I seriously doubt that, it's unlikely that we are paying him a great deal more than he could have got from one of the big European jobs (i.e. one of the top 5 or 6 clubs in England, Spain, Italy, Germany and to a lesser extent Holland and France) which, I'm sure he would have got with a bit of patience.

.
You seriously think he could have got a job at one of the top 5 or 6 clubs in England? For what it's worth I really don't mind Benitez but you're as deluded as anyone if you think that.

Yes of course I do, he's a highly decorated manager who has won trophies almost everywhere he's been including the Champions League and the UEFA Cup.

His previous clubs include Liverpool, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid but no, you're right, he's not good enough for one of the top 5 or 6 clubs in England. rolleyes

Which club right now would take him over their current manager?

Leicester - nope
Arsenal - nope
Spurs - nope
City - nope
United - nope
Southampton - doubt it
West Ham - nope
Liverpool - nope
Stoke - we might have our first winner
Chelsea - nope

From a team that's been turgid st all season you can't just expect to instantly turn things around and comfortably survive, especially when goals were a problem all season. We were far harder to beat in the last 6 games or so.

He's by far the best manager to be at the club in the past 12 years so too right folk should show a bit of optimism despite the relegation.

I think Rafa is just what you guys needs. He has shown the stature to change Ashley’s management set up for the club. That has to be good. You will be able to retain the players he wants and with a decent chance of bouncing straight back up, should have no problem recruiting either.

The North East needs its Premier League clubs so we look forward to welcoming you back with two sound drubbings from Jose’s boys!

Not this year Ray, sadly. A new little one is precluding to many trips out and I've got Le Mans in a couple of weeks time.
