I'm sure if you trawl back thru this thread, you'll find plenty of Newcastle fans having pops at Chelsea and others re the dubious history of their owners. Reading the press and how they take delight in our problems, while at the same time telling us we should be grateful for being mediocre and that we're a small club (see post below yours!) I am also baffled by most of our fans. I've not bought any merchandise for at least a decade now.

Not a Newcastle fan but I've never picked-up on any vibe they're disliked by fans of other clubs either (well, except Sunderland fans that is!). However, I think the "myth" the Geordies love their club more than fans of other clubs is probably due to the fact their support both home and away has tended to hold-up pretty well even when the team has been performing poorly. Even when they dropped to the Championship they were more often than not close filling St James' Park for home games (so circa 50k) and regularly sold their full allocation for away games; not bad for a club that hasn't won a trophy in decades and (IMO) better than the vast majority of teams in England would be likely to manage in similar circumstances.
