You and I see seem to differ on the 'kick lumps' impact. I see it as US tries to kick lumps out of pace players such as Lennon, ref trying to make an impression starts throwing cards about. US then can't commit to tackles, England go onto win.

Well if we don't beat them we don't deserve to go any further i suppose a draw would be ok but then that means we have to win our remaining matches to make sure.

not sure I agree tonks.

USA yes a draw wouldn't be disastrous but a defeat also not as I think we'll murder algeria and beat slovenia.

england always play better when it matters and like I said above we need to play better each game and peak properly.

alternatively we take the world cup by storm and pulverise everyone!!!

lol

Did England not go out of Espania '82 unbeaten?

Hammered France in group stage (eventual 3rd place team).
Drew with West Germany (eventual beaten finalists).

Pretty good team, til Brooking and Keegan came off the bench, both too old and too injured.

Well we all have our own takes on things.

I think you are being overly negative regarding any English victories of the past.

I genuinely enjoyed the 82 and 86 World Cups, and think England acquitted themselves pretty well.

Don't forget, in '82 Italy drew all 3 of their group games, just scraping through on goal difference.
They then fluked a win over the greatest team to ever grace a football field, and met a mediocre Germany in the final.

Luck plays a huge part in winning most World Cups.

It took (possibly) the best player to ever kick a ball to blatantly cheat for us to be elimnated from the World Cup. At that point we were actually beginning to get on top of one of the greatest teams in world cup history.

Had that goal been (rightfully) disallowed who knows what might have happened.

IS THE DEPRESSION BAR OPEN IN HERE ALREADY FFS.

give it a go at least.

Expectation outweighs reality for all but a select few in every major tourney - why should we be any different! lol.

I'll take my slice of Hubris pie and revanchism for a couple of weeks thank you very much.

These are bloody hard things to win don't forget and there a notable absentees already.

if it weren't for the Spanish uprising (used to be perennial under achievers) and Messi (although if we do play the argies again we'll beat them to stuff up maradonna (B. Robson RIP)) I'd say we have a good chance.

African nations are overrated
Italy missing some excellent players and very hard to do back to back wins.
portugal not as good as they think they are, but can be brilliant
France terrible and crap manager
brazil, not the skillful side of past WC but more physical
Germany - perennial OVER achievers given the quality of their team, but cen never discount them
Host nation - weakish
Holland can never rule out.

So called up and comers, USA - occassion will get to them. Australia - lack big stage experience.

smile reminds me of the bit in Mike Bassett where Tonks scores a last minute goal against them, one commmentator says "Was that handball" other commentator, "Against the Argies? No way!!"
