I was put off by the on-paper performance too but in real life they are somewhat brisker largely because the CVT gets the most out of the engine instantly. Performance from a standing start is pretty decent.

In the end the Outback went from being an also-ran to our first choice and we don't regret it one bit.
I’ve not completely discounted it. It does fulfil many of the criteria I’m seeking in my next car. But I can’t test drive one yet, so just exploring other options in case it’s performance isn’t quite there for me.

First time poster here but I recently asked about Outbacks on the Car Buying section; I was considering a UK 2.5 petrol in the 15k to 20k bracket, but the rather tame performance figures have put me off. Then I noticed the Forester XT with 240hp and it’s certainly got my attention. Any chance of a bit more of a review? I noticed in an earlier post you said you’d added some subtle mods, your car looks great, could you detail what you’ve added? Any information would be much appreciated.
I live in a rural part of the UK, have a dog and do between 5k and 10k a year driving with a lot being around exploring places to walk with the dog, so I’m thinking a Forester XT could be what I’m looking for?
I've had the Foz nearly 2yrs and covered 25k.
Quick when you want to be (deceptively), yet very happy to just trundle around. Fuel comsuption overall is way better than the H6 OB, I rarely drop below 30mpg, for my driving, unless you're in complete hooligan mode. It has enough power to embaress plenty on the roads, and you'd have to spend far greater in it's class to completely out perform it in all areas.

I've no issue with the CVT box, definately far better that the 5EAT, smooth and quick to repond in comparison, less lag. As for the drumming and whine, yes it's there, but you have to be very picky to find it, and it's not constant. So if spend all of your driving without using the radio, you might hear it. Certainly nothing like the mainstream journalists go on about. It is a different driving style compared to the 5EAT.

You also have the option on three different modes I, S, S# as per other models

Handling, is good for something that has 220mm clearance, but if you press it, things get understeery n rolly, the rear ARB is 16mm..... plus it's a little soft for 240bhp. But for most, probabably okay.

NVH is good, and it's quiet, hence the deceptively quick bit.
Kit is as good as the Leggy/Outback, and in a few areas better.
Boot space is less, as it's shorter, but the seating space front and rear is more spacious.

Reliability, no major issues yet, and maintenance has been routine, and yearly bits whether it's needs it or not, plus a set of boots last year.
Wheel bearing have just started to make a noise 57K

The mods, STI springs all round, these make the ride firmer, and have a subtle 15mm drop. The ARB is now an adjustable 22mm affair, currently set at 21mm. Both have sharpened up the handling nicely. Cosmetically: flaps, wind deflectors, yellow fogs, de-chromed the front end, and the STI lower lip.

I think I posted in here years ago when I had my RB5, but thought I'd share some pics of my new JDM Hawkeye STI. Bit of a convoluted story but I was moving back to the UK, and this cropped up nearby (was living in Munich at the time) so being JDM was RHD, and as I'd always wanted a newage STi, bought this and just going through the process of importing it from Germany.

Was imported from Japan into Germany in October 2020 so still in pretty good nick, no rust at all, mechanicals all seem very good.

Currently awaiting an MOT slot in order to get it registered on UK plates, can't wait. The German export plates you see here expired April 13th so haven't driven it for nearly a month.

Already got the bug and fitted some prosport gauges, and it came with a Trust JASMA approved exhaust, I think it's cat-back, as I can't see that trust make a downpipe for the twinscroll cars, could be HKS? Sounds amazing (this is my first twinscroll/equal headers car) and it's seriously quick compared to my old RB5.

Condition wise it's got a bit of lacquer peel on the roof/bonnet scoop and someone nicked half the bonnet grill just before I bought it, but these seem to be like hens teeth unless you want to spend £300 on ebay!

Thought I’d pop in and say hi - I've been driving Honda’s for the last 5 years or so and have just made the jump to Subaru.

I’ve used BHP Imports to import cars previously, and when this Tuned by STI Legacy came up I couldn’t pass on it.

Just got the long wait now for it to land and be registered.

Popped over to the Isle of Wight this week for a couple of days, the 4wd came in handy at points also finally had a reason to use the upgraded lighting, made driving on NSL unlit roads a lot safer compared to the pitiful stock setup.

Need to raise the ground clearance around 15mm as disembarking the ferry damaged the front splitter, insisted on being put on the lower deck with the HGV's on the way back.

Had the same issue with mine every time I drove to France, it got to the point I would take off the splitter for every ferry journey and leave it in the garage until I got back home then fitted it again. A bit annoying to be honest lol! I found it depended on the tide as well, if it was a high tide I could get in as the ramp was pretty level, low tide and that was it! Numptys working the ferry didnt care either, just wave you one while watching you crunch into the ground...

The Blob has a longer, lower front overhang compared to the earlier Bug. It was particularly noticeable in that I couldn't fit my trolley jack under the front of my Blob, that I could easily do with my Bug, even though they had exact same suspension and wheels.

I found the same with the hawkeye when trying to get it onto ramps, not even close to the wheels before hitting the bumper, had to use a load of decking boards in front of the ramps to get it on.

Totally off the Subaru topic and maybe hard to believe, I also had the same trouble getting a Nissan Note onto the same ramps, surprisingly long overhang in the front of those as well.

All the other cars I owned though went on with no issue, strange...

IIRC, the front bumper on the bug rises up quite sharply towards the nose. The blob stays a lot flatter to the ground.

A bug WRX at stock height has some silly levels of ground clearance!

The whole front of the Blob from the end of the wings forwards is maybe 6" longer. My Bug was considerably lowered but could still get under the front. No chance on the Blob running the same springs.

Whilst waiting on uklegacy account activation I may as well ask here.
Anyone thinking or is selling a 3.0 spec b legacy or a 3.0 outback?
Its pretty slim pickings out there at the moment.

I have a new car due in November (V8 Mustang biggrin) and will be selling my 2007 H6 Outback. If you’re anywhere near Edinburgh let me know and I’d be happy to share more details. Dreading a private sale tbh but the p/x offer was pretty derisory.

Thanks for responding. I purchased a facelift legacy on Saturday for shed money. Needs a bit of tidying up but so far so good.

Thread resurrection: I’m collecting a 2013 Forester XT on Tuesday! I was wondering if you could tell me where you bought the wind deflectors and STI front diffuser from? I have found wind deflectors on line but am struggling with the chin diffuser? Any help much appreciated.

If you don't mind me asking, how much was your Px offer?

I just paid £1800 for a 2004 H6 Outback that looks to be very well looked after (currently sitting on 140k miles). Especially given the current market, I thought I was getting a pretty good deal. Now just the usual wait for something major to go pop in the next few months.
