I think a nice little EP3 CTR or Clio 172/182 would be a better purchase. I did the whole buying a car on finance thing when I was 23 and while I loved my car and kept it for 4.5 years, it quickly got boring paying for something I already had (and was depreciating). Thankfully, I was able to maintain the payments and look after the car. My mate had an E36 M3 Evo on finance, which he bought for £9k about five years ago, before I bought it from him. He stretched himself to pay the car off over two years and then insisted on going to BMW for servicing, as well as using up Michelins quite regularly. I appreciate he's gone to extremes of cost, but he eventually ended up with credit card debt he couldn't fund and now can't even get a mobile phone contract as he had to settle the credit card debt, i.e. paid a fraction of the final balance to get them to leave him alone, which is now marked on his credit history. He managed to pay off the loan in the two years as planned, but the running costs of the car indeed hurt him. He's 30, as I will be in a few months. I'm now married and have 1.3 children (another one in the oven as it were), my own house and still some decent(ish) cars. My mate is now bald, single and sharing a flat with a dude.

To be fair, I'm going a bit thin on top as well. I once said to my dad in my early 20s that my nightmare was hitting 30 and not having a fast car, a woman or hair. My mate is living that nightmare.

My Mrs had one until a few months ago. Had it for about 8 years and about 120000 miles .

They are well built cars but are a bit out dated inside. Some parts can be pricy but they dont go wrong very often. TBH she didnt look after it and im of the opinion that if she cant be bothered why bother myself. Despite this 1x year service and the only things extra had to be done were brakes, tyres, battery,
radiator and a clutch that was only because she cant drive !!

Insurance is the killer even for me at 33 clean licence never had any points or claims. It went up a crazy ammount when we quoted for me to be a named driver so we didnt bother.

Fuel = stop at every garage

Not the best cars to drive tbh but somehow you forget about the bad bits when your driving them i do miss that grin factor when driving it. We would certainly have another.

Small edit, to make it more realistic.

Just to add my respective costs

Impreza P1 about 400bhp
insurance all mods declared, 8 years no claims, good postcode clean licence £950

Legacy Spec-B (2004) standard - insurance £500

BMW E30 325I Sport insurance £350.

So I think he is in for a bit of a shock if he thinks the insurance will be only a couple hundred more than the BM.

I'm fairly comfortable financially but I am lucky in that if the P1 breaks it is not my daily car so it can sit around until I can afford the bits.
Its going to be the gearbox or bottom end that go next.
I dunno what you lot do with your imprezas but when standard in mixed driving I used to see about 26 mpg in the P1, around town still over 20 and even now with 400bhp it will still do 24mpg. My old V2 STI would vary from 8.5mpg (a weekend at the Ring) to 31mpg. My 3.0 legacy averages about 25 but I do a lot of short journeys in it and my Dad's Forester Turbo does about 27mpg with a PPP kit on it.
