Hi. I'm going to see this car at the weekend, it's a 98 model. Does anybody know how to tell if it's a version 4 or 5?

Cheers,
Lefty

If it's 98MY it'll be V4.

The coil pack will be offset to the passenger side of the inlet manifold on a V5/99 JDM car. They started making them in September 1998 so it could be on an "S" plate.

Thanks chaps, this it:

http://item.mobileweb.ebay.co.uk/viewitem;PdsSessi...

Not sure what to expect really, I had a 99 uk 2000 turbo a few years back and loved it, the compliant ride was perfectly suited to the bumpy and generally buggered roads around here. Is this going to be rock hard?

Part of me thinks I'd be better getting a uk turbo and tuning it but I know the gearboxes aren't as strong and it's not easy finding a good condition, low mile uk turbo that
Hasn't been barried.

Maybe a p1 would be a better bet...?

Late registered P1 would be nice but it won't be cheap. Try and find one that's had an engine rebuild and been remapped properly.

The 98 scoob in that listing/picture is a V4. Nice clean looking car, mileage is OK, and it's a V-limited so will be quick with that short ratio box. You'll generally find that owners of Type R's and P1's will look after their P&J's, give them regular oil changes etc...

Certainly the right end of the classics market to be looking at, and don't worry about paying extra for a really nice example as it will be worth it over the substantial dross you'll come across during your search.

I wouldn't touch that one. It just doesn't look like it's been a cherished model. Illegal licence plate, horrid lights, non-standard wheels, poor looking paint (photos), non standard spoiler, non-standard front lip.

Why not look at this one which is cheaper and has a proper write up

  • *Hmm misplaced all service docs. Maybe one to avoid but it does show what a proper one should look like

What are they (Sti v-ltd) like to drive?

I don't think (im almost certain) the Type R in Newburgh is a an STI version.

It doesn't have a red inlet manifold, as stated the rear spoiler is non-standard, the v-limited badge below stereo should have STI on it, the rear bootlid doesn't have an STI badge but does have the WRX one from the WRX's, no mention of DCCD, no STI front carbon strut brace, the front wing doesn't have an STI badge.

The one at Newburgh is a wrx type r, not an sti. Very rare, but they do exist.

Oh and the intercooler is not an STI item. It is a version 4 btw. One thing to consider when buying v4 and earlier cars is that the standard brakes are garbage.

Does look like a version 4 WRX Type R V-ltd rather than an STI

Great cars. I had a 99 type r. Swaped the engine for a 2.5 sti engine when the previous one had problems. Fastest car I have owned. But make sure it's been mapped for uk fuel, since it first entered the uk, otherwise it may have problems.

I'd be interested to know what's wrong with it and why it's unlikely to have been looked after. How can you tell the paint is poor from those terrible photos?

So it's got a different set of wheels, rear lights and couple of body add-ons. They are easily reversible body mods if you don't like them.

Looking at the info below and the engine bay picture it looks mechanically completely bog standard so it's likely got standard power therefore unmolested and not chipped or fecked about with. What's not to like about an unstressed low mileage motor, and how do you deduce it hasn't been looked after??

Misplaced service docs... That alone would make me run a mile hehe

Quite a few cars of that age have aftermarket lights because the standard ones are so bad. The spots really help when on full beam, but when dropping back to the headlights it's surprisingly dark!

Popular misconception that:

4Pot Front Brakes were actually first fitted to version 4 STI cars. The following year, the front callipers made their way as standard equipment on to the V5 UK cars.

V3 cars, however, never had 4pot fronts.
