I'm at Crossroads now. They've sent me out in an XV (Outback-style Impreza) to see how I'd get on with the diesel but I'm not sold on it.

I think I'll probably come back for a new top-of-the-range Outback 3.6 litre auto next year. Can't find a fault with it (and I can afford not to worry too much about fuel economy). It's every car I'd ever need.

Our Outback is great. It doesnt need 99 RON fuel

They said the error represents itself as a catalyser failure/terminal inefficiency but as the problem appears to have gone away, they suspect either dodgy fuel or some "drying out" since I drove through the floods a couple of weeks back.

They have done a spectacular job on my brakes which were juddering really badly.

AAAAAND the problem's back.

I think it's wise I look for some 2nd hand parts but could you confirm that if this is a catalyser issue then it will be a problem with those in the manifolds rather than the 3rd cat after the manifolds meet? I *think* there's only an O2 sensor in each of the manifolds, so they wouldn't detect an issue with the 3rd cat would they?

If you can confirm that I'll go searching for a pair of manifold cats and/or a pair of O2 sensors.

Anyone got any for sale, while I'm here?

Better get that diagnostic device plugged back in to check for sure it's the same error code/s. If so do a reset. If it comes straight back on then you're looking for new cats. If it takes a while it could still be something else.

Have you been using 99RON fuel or did you keep using the 95RON normal stuff?

I've been mixing 99 and 95 to be honest.

I'll hook up the laptop this weekend and see if I can narrow down the field of possibilities, as well as doing a reset.

Thanks.

You need to stick to one fuel only just to rule out it's not a fuel issue.

If you stuck to 95RON and this error happens the next course of action would be to swap to 99RON and stay with 99RON only. If your errors don't come back it's highly likely your car doesn't like 95RON. If they do then it's not fuel, you go back to 95RON and you look for other issues.

Mixing these fuels one tankful here another one there is not going to eliminate fuel as being an issue.

good luck with that smile

It occurred a couple of times with mine a fair few months apart but I always ran it on 95ron. Maybe see if it is the sensor rather than that cat that needs changing as that may be much cheaper

After the last time I tried it once on 98/99 (whatever Tesco's brew is) then ran it exclusively on 95. I've only tried 98/99 again this week to see if it eliminates the problem again but it hasn't.

It's been great in this weather though. smile

Unlikely 99RON will eliminate any problems now, sufficient damage may have already been done to your cats to warrant replacement if its not a sensor issue.

Unfortunately cats are not cheap. I have to replace both on the Jag now and they are over £700+vat each for OEM, or i can get some made up by a custom exhaust manufacturer for £700+vat a pair including fitting. They manufacture the cats and any bits of exhaust you need in-house. For half the price of the OEM it's well worth a trip for me to Derby. biggrin

The dash lights have gone off again.

I suppose it gives a little more time for the drive to dry-up before I pull the lambdas for inspection and cleaning.

have you managed to plug into the ecu yet. Your error codes should still be in the ecu's history until the ecu is reset.

Oh crikey - me and unnecessary work - never gonna happen. My boss and my Boss (work and home - intentional capital letter) believe it's impossible to get me to do any NECESSARY work. biggrin

On the way to work yesterday the power steering failed and the battery light came on. I know a bit about cars so I considered it must be a belt and once I'd stopped, sure enough the multi-function drive belt was found to be hanging loose. I had no way of inspecting further (wearing my suit) so I wrestled it to my favourite garage for their diagnosis. CRIKEY it was heavy.

I was dreading them telling me that they couldn't find a cause for the belt having fallen off - there's nothing worse than fixing a problem when you're not sure what the cause was in the first place. Thankfully (I think) they found the tensioner had parted company so they ordered me a new tensioner pulley and belt (the old belt was relatively new but it's worth it for a tenner). I've no idea why the old tensioner fell off but having just collected the car I have found that ALL the dashboard lights have now gone off again.

So I'm left wondering if there has been a long-term issue with the tensioner and this is all related.

I really must go and interrogate the ECU. I wish I had more time (and fewer nags to do things around the house).

So glad it didn't cause any damage. The reason the tensioner fell off is because it wasn't put on properly at the last change. These things need to be torqued up so if it fell off it couldn't have been installed to the manufacturers spec. Once it's torqued up it should not come off until you take it off.

well done!! biggrin

I did question whether it could have been put back incorrectly because it was a Subaru dealer that serviced it last (and they are spot-on for the work they do). The manager said it was the wheel only that fell off, implying a bracket remained. I didn't see it so I can't qualify that but no sense of impropriety was implied.

Dash lights still off - 3rd time I've used the car since collecting. smile
