Morning all,

Since I was a young lad growing up, I've always wanted to own a Subaru. This was down to reading stuff like Max Power etc but mainly down to watching Colin McRae. However, a combination of working (where I needed a diesel car) and money meant that it wasn't a realistic buy.

I'm now working much closer to home and thinking about selling my Astra SRi, thus fulfilling my dream! However, I really don't want to spend much more than £5000 or £6000 and whilst there are plenty for sale withing that price, I don't want to get landed with a bag of bolts thats going to cost me the earth every month.

So, is it possible to get a decent Impreza WRX for this sort of budget?

In a word, yes. Hawkeye models with c.80k on the clock can be picked up for this kind of value, but of course there are going to be a few examples out there at this price which are looking a bit sorry. Be sure to test drive, check and re-check service history and a good examination, who knows what bargain you could find!
They're strong cars with strong engines, this is a realistic budget for a tidy blob-eye/hawk-eye example.

Good luck!

Yes, you should be able to although might take a bit of looking.

I bought a 04 WRX PPP with 27K & 1 previous owner in superb condition for around that in Dec 2011. I've since done approx 14K in it and it hasn't missed a beat.

£6000 should get you a decent blob sti (not widetrack/DCCD) from a private sale with around 60k on the clock

Good luck looking

I reckon if your lucky, and find a car that has been cosseted by it's owner, then you should be able to find a good one for that money. I would start looking on enthusiast sites like this one, or a Subaru owners website.

Mine is an '04 Blobeye WRX with 68k on it. It is absolutely immaculate, carefully driven, and well maintained, but it's probably only worth around £5k now. (Unfortunately not for sale though)

For £7.8k you can have my 2 owner from new, standard P1 with Prodrive upgrades

It's in the PH classifieds if you're interested.

A friend of mine picked up an 06 Hawkeye WRX with 60,000 on the clock for £6000 from an indie dealer who had taken it as a PX, so I'm sure (and I have looked and thought about buying before) that there are some ace cars out there for £5000 and less.

Finally found one I was happy with for 5 1/2: 2005 wagon WRX PPP blue with 19k on the clock. Really happy with it and feels like a new car.

I had been looking for a few months and kept seeing cars with significant crash damage, mechanical failures, too much wear and tear...etc

So yes, if youre after a saloon youll find one for <=5k no problem. If its a wagon, you'll have to look but Im sure youd find a good'un for 5k.

Nice looking Impreza! Looks like the lad in the back likes it too!

I paid 4k for my RB5 which I adore but to be fair its cost me another 3k in general maintenance over the past year.

Wowsers how have you spent that on maintenance?

In 3 or 4 years I have only had to do servicing, brakes and rocker cover gaskets.

Probably spent £3k including a full respray, but thats not general maintenance.

There's a long list! It's somewhat bad luck and somewhat my lack of having the car completely checked over before I bought it. The car was MOT'd one week before I bought it with no advisories! And it looked sounded pretty good.

Some of the work has been body and some mechanical.

Sounds unlucky. My P1 costs me about £600 a year, if that.

But Subaru service history from day one and only 2 owners helps!

Yeah, probably less unlucky and more my own lack of inspection skills. It's ok, I love the old girl and figure each time I replace something its something else that is less likely to go wrong! It's like I'm slowly rebuilding the car!

I am on Impreza No 8 at the moment, most i have paid is 4k, all been decent cars only needing routine servicing, so for 5k you should have no problems.

I would say go for the WRX blobeye with the facelift interior, from about 2005 I think.
This avoids the March 2006 Tax increase (£470) on the hawk eye.
A lot are over priced but seem to be on the market ages, £5k will get you a lower milage one in a sellable colour like blue or black too.

Just looks better than the earlier cheaper switches, and of course its the same as the hawkeye.
