Well, at some point this year, my 2005 wagon is gona be going on sale. I intitially bought it, as my mileage was low, as working away from home. However not much changed, but in the last 2.5 weeks I've put 5 tanks of optimal in it. I am only home for 3 weeks, but possibly making up for lost time, I am hammering the miles in.
It's just throwing money away to be honest, as its getting used as a daily.

So I am gona sell up. However a replacement, I just cannot make my mind up on. I should have about 17K to spend. Looked at the scirrocco 170 TDI. My other half will be the main driver, so I'm looking for something that will suit her, then quench my need when I am home.
What would you go after for 17k?

Get the calculator out, don't do it based on just petrol costs.

(Made up figures obviously)

Say your Subaru is worth 5k. And you spend 4k a year on fuel. In 3 years time it's only worth 2.5k. So it's cost you £14.5k for 3 years.

Buy a 17k VW and in 3 years it will be worth £9k if you are lucky, and cost 2.5k per year on fuel.
So you've spent £15.5k for 3 years.

So old Subaru is cheaper to run than newish VW!

That's my man maths, means I can keep my Forester! (But I only do 8-10k miles per year).

Why not spend a lot less on a runaround and keep the scooby as a toy?

Already have a 2010 Supercharged Lotus for my toy. I get your thinking on the yearly costs, and you probably ain't miles out. However, some very quick diesels out there at the mo.

If you've already got a toy then why bother with a quick diesel? Seems like if you're trying to save £'s then buy a cheaper less high performance diesel ( sounds so wrong...)lower purchase price, insurance, running costs etc and save more money?

However that said, the VW idea sounds good, and it would be one I'd consider if i wasnt concered about saving £'s, then if i wasn't concerned about saving £'s i'd keep the wagon....

I'm currently gona be looking at changing the Elise too, just not decided to what. I know you can't have everything, but finding a balance is what I am looking for. I still need to try these cars to be honest, and coming from the scoob, my expectations are not high. But the Subaru is just to damn thirsty, and its really starting to wear on me!

Whoops, amazingly it wasn't. Was supposed to read 'having the same thought myself'! The only issue I find is that for the money of my blobeye, not much ticks the practicality and fun box quite the same.

I got 160 miles out of a tank in my Forester last week (after a 140 mile hoon)!

But - Depending on mileage I wouldn't buy a performance diesel (I'm selling my VRS at the mo), or diesel full stop. You really need to be doing 35K + miles/yr. They are just too expensive to run despite the mpg

Even dropping mine to the lower boost(leaner) setting, makes no blind bit of difference.

Yeh, anyway, how are diesels to expensive to run? I thought it was the exact opposite? Well, if service intervals are comparible, I wouldn't expect it to be too different from any other car. Or am I wrong?

Fair enough, not sure what MPG you'll get from the VW but i'd say its a good one, at least its not a diesel Audi ;o)

PS i've managed 315miles out of a tank in my Bugeye WRX :OP

I've managed to squeeze out about the same mate, driving like a granny. Lol
Scirocco has a tank range over 600 miles. I know that will be a bit unrealistic.

Can you convert a turbo Subaru? I thought it was only the NA ones that could be converted.

Selling a petrol car to buy a newish depreciating diesel car is unlikely to save you any money.

If you want to save money buy a cheaper car that has less to depreciate.

I think subaru only recommend the n/a ones but you can do it to a turbo. I've read about a couple and I'm actually looking at a 2.5 turbo forester and sticking lpg on it smile

I have a 2003 ford mondeo estate 2.0 turbo diesel 130 bhp zetec s, goes well and I get 00 mile per tank if i drive on the motorway at 70/80 mpg.

I have just bought a impreza wrx estate blobeye 2005, I live in france in Morzine in the mountains and will do about 8/10,000 miles a year in it. Am I in for a very big shock re fuel. I hear about 30 mpg which is not going to kill me but aint great. Are short trips just about town also very bad for fuel .Sorry new to this Subaru game!!
