I have just bought a impreza wrx estate blobeye 2005, I live in france in Morzine in the mountains and will do about 8/10,000 miles a year in it. Am I in for a very big shock re fuel. I hear about 30 mpg which is not going to kill me but aint great. Are short trips just about town also very bad for fuel .Sorry new to this Subaru game!!

Can you convert a turbo Subaru? I thought it was only the NA ones that could be converted.
I think subaru only recommend the n/a ones but you can do it to a turbo. I've read about a couple and I'm actually looking at a 2.5 turbo forester and sticking lpg on it smile
I converted my 2006 WRX to LPG. Worked a treat and there was only a slight loss in power. It literally halved my fuel bill. If you are running on vpower etc you will save even more.

I can dig out some links to posts I've written about it if you are interested.

You will have to pretty much drive everywhere off boost to achieve 30mpg. Average will be more likely low 20s.

Having just done what you're thinking, I'm going to say don't do it.

I recently sold my WRX because my work commute increased to 250 miles a week and I got sick at putting a tank of petrol in every week. I've turned to the DERV side and it's not what I thought it was going to be like. I get around 420 miles to a tank of fuel, which is about 130 more than I got in the Impreza but I'm not sure it was worth the extra outlay or the removal of bang from my drive. Diesel goes meh, petrol goes bang.

For now I'm sticking to it until my commute lessens and then I'll be back in petrol. For info it's a Mazda 3 Sport, nicer interior but lack of go even though it has more torque (which is noticeable on the motorway tbh).

However to answer your question the Scirroco is a good choice, looked at a few but weren't pratical for plus more than we wanted to pay. The other obvious one would be a BMW 320/330d.

When I bought the scoob, I said, will hardly ever be driven, as I work overseas. But I find that when I come home, and off for several weeks, I'm using the car daily, and rattling up a fair few miles. Not made my mind up completely yet, gona go and get a drive of some cars next time I am home, see what floats mines and the Mrs boat.
In saying that, she would be happy with a 1.2 Micra no doubt!

some discussion http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=921...

My car made it's demise on the motorway when I was rear ended at approximately 70mph. The side where the tank was took most of the impact. The tank was fine and just broke off it's rubber mounts as it should have in an accident.

The fire brigade went nuts when they saw the tank but there was nothing to worry about.

Running on LPG did reduce the performance a little but you can switch over to petrol at any time so it's not a problem.

I always took my car to an independent garage for servicing and it would always pull a crowd of people looking at it. Most would dismiss it saying it was sacrilege to run an impreza on LPG but most of them only took their cars out for 50 or so miles at the weekend. I was doing 300+ per week in mine.

I loved my scooby but for the fuel it needed the performance wasn't amazing. I can't see myself owing another but I'm glad I had the one that I did.

If you've got any questions let me know I'm happy to help.

Yep thanks for the write up mate!
LPG does sound interesting, but is the price of Gas just gona creep up eventually too, as it has done from the outset?

I'm going to guess it won't go past roughly 50% of diesel cost. That's how it seems to be atm. Anyway even if it rose to 75% of petrol costs. 22mpg would roughly be 30 mpg equivalent and I doubt the government will tax it to high hell?

It's been about 18 months since I last bought LPG but it seems to track to be approximatley 50% of the cost of petrol.

You don't get as far on LPG as you do on petrol but it's only about 2mpg different.

The people who know nothing were always saying to me that hardly anywhere sells LPG and I'll run out and be stranded. It's true that there is a smaller amount of filling stations than petrol but there is still quite a few about. As for running out of LPG it's not an issue, you just run on petrol until you get some more LPG.

It's a shame that manufacturers haven't embraced LPG more as it's a great alternative to diesel.

One thing to note is Eurotunnel do not allow LPG cars on their trains but you are ok on ferries so it won't prevent you getting onto the continent.
