I live in the mountains in Switzerland and drive a subaru legacy. In the mountainous areas every other village has a subaru garage. They are incredibly popular over here for good reason, 1. they dont break down, 2. The AWD eats bad road conditions, 3. they Haul.

If you think you are going to be an obscurity with one then think again. Whatever the model Subaru is doesnmt really matter they all handled the snow/ice impeccably. Stay away from the diesels though if you are moving to Switzerland. With the way the wind is blowing here they could be banned soon enough and in the short term will be hit with higher taxes than petrol. if you are moving to this area feel free to PM me for any advice. Im here 7 years now.

Thanks to all of you guys. Great posts and very informative.

I will be around Val d'isere, so similar terrain than you. I wonder how difficult the French will be for me to use a RHD? I am going to a local garage next week to talk about what I need to do to get it registered in France.

You won't have any trouble importing a RHD car to France so long as you have all the correct paperwork and the car complies regarding lights, kph markings on the speedo etc. My old Legacy Turbo was RHD and since then I have imported a BMW 530d Touring and a VX220.without problems. Driving a RHD car here is not a problem really, just a bit harder sometimes for overtaking, a small price to pay when you compare the high prices asked for used cars in France with what you will have paid in the UK. As I said before, check out the availability of Subaru dealers for servicing in your area, we are in the foothills of the Pyrenees where the need is similar to the Alps but Subaru Service here is truly disastrous.
