still suffer/ed the standard 2.5 failures yes , but were running fine on uk sul before actually being mapped , as the guy mapping it checked it before he mapped them , both failed some time as in years after they were mapped , yes expensive but still great cars no regrets

I think a lot a lot of the 'they blow up' rep came from people moving on to tuning them from YB engines and their ilk. Chuck boost at it, maybe add some fuel.. don't even look at engine management.... oh, there's a hole in the block.

Good fuel.
Check for knock at regular intervals.
Keep on top of the oil system (regular changes, consider replacing the pump every 2nd cam belt change).
If it modified - make sure it's properly set up.

Not an unreasonable list.

Sorry Yb not sure what that means , i think i’ve just been unlucky with both my 2.5 lumps , both were tuned by knowledge able tuners , first one was hg then a year later bottom end went , i learnt always do bottom end if hg goes , second car the same model , more or less same mileage and same issue , hg went this time i did bottom end too , bottom end seemed fine but was on the way out , fsti boost is lower than a impreza sti as it’s got a smaller turbo , since forged i’ve never looked back , one of those things , now both cars go like stink , maps were checked and were fine , but pre mapping fueling was fine , plus i don’t skimp on servicing and oil was done at around 5k miles on each car

Sums up the exact reason I won’t touch a 2.5 with a barge pole. You just never know if and when. I prefer to sleep at night!

i do agree with you , you don’t know if it will fail , many have not so as i said i’ve been unlucky , once they are forged they are a great engine , one fsti is now on 180k miles so for me i’m not that biothered anout getting it forged and the 5k it cost me , i had a 2 litre sti jdm wagon , one reason i sold it was i did not like the rather laggy 2 litre lump , the 2.5 fsti lump is way way quicker and much easier to drive , im sure there are many cars out there that can be bought with forged engines already done
