I've ordered a pair of Celestron Skymaster 25x70 binoculars. they should arrive tomorrow. I'll now spend some time becoming familiar with what's what amongst the constellations to get the best out of them.
I'd also recommend investing in a decent tripod. It will make focusing much easier and your arms won't want to drop off after 10 minutes!

Thanks Nelly, I'll see if they will attach to my camera tripod. Otherwise I'll buy one.

The Orion nebula is found nearer to the 'sword' rather than one of the stars in his belt. As someone else has already said, Stellarium is a wonderful piece of software that will show you what's in the night sky in real time. Just take a few seconds to set it up by telling it your own location and away you go. Not only is it really easy to use, but it's free too.

My own attempt at the nebula.

Well so far looking through the 25x70 bins I see slightly bigger stars wink However Jupiter's moons are quite clear now.

I'm looking forward to Stargazing Live tonight.

The best things to look for with bins are the brighter deep sky objects. With not much of a moon up at the moment, Orion (M42) will be good, also try and find the Andromeda galaxy.

Good processing. You've captured the Trapeziun nicely.

What equipment did you use?

Should we have an astrophotography thread here?
