Biology books?

I've been reading and enjoying The Fabric of the Cosmos by Brian Greene; a very challenging read at times! I've now found myself interested in biology and so on the hunt for a book on the subject. It's just an interest rather than a desire to become a biologist so I don't want any study books or anything too heavy, just something in a similar to Brian Greene's book. Any suggestions?
