Is I Robot the future of humanity?
Discussion
Having this discussion with the missus earlier. (I've read Asimov's book, she's only seen the film. I stopped watching when Will Smith crashed the MV Augusta. Knowing the film industry, several Augustas, but, leaving that highly annoying point aside...)
With computers advancing at current rates, and humanity's alarming tendency to destroy itself, would/could a computer decide to simply stop humans from doing anything?
No eating (risk of choking)
No drinking (same, but drowning as well)
No sex (VD)
No driving (fairly obvious)
No working
Not even twidling thumbs. (RSI)
Or has she just had nightmares over nothing?

TBH I'd say logan's run is more the future.
if not that, then 1984,
and if not that then 28 days later.
Civilisation moves in surges, never continuously forward. It would be very naive to suggest that we are at a tipping point in development for which humanity will only move forward from. I personally think that the American/Western civilisation will crumble, leaving in it's wake one hell of a mess, potentially sending humanity back a few spaces.
So in fact I don't actually think we will get to the point that robots/supercomputers will rule, as I think something will happen before this.
that or zombies

Bits of 1984 are practically certain.if not that, then 1984,
and if not that then 28 days later.

for some reason, I don't think a WW3 would happen, or at least they wouldn't want to let on it's happening.Or World war 3.
It will be called a war on terror, and it will be mental. Gone are the days of countries actually following the geneva convention to any degree.

You forgot to add, With computers advancing at current rates, and humanity's alarming tendency to destroy itself, would/could a computer decide to simply stop humans from doing anything?

No breathing air pollution.

Have you read 1984? They are living in a post world war state, that's part of the justification for the totalitarian society.Or World war 3.
Of course robotics and artificial intelligence will be a feature of the future, but I don't think there will be such a clear divide between humans and robots, with the level of augmentation and nanotechnology we will effectively be the robots, the conflict will be between those who can't afford the 'upgrades' and those who can. This was quite well portrayed in the recent computer game Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
The next big leap in technology will be optical computers, at the moment, electronic microprocessors are limiting the speed and capacity of computing. They get too hot and electrons travel too slowly. Optical processors will change everything and lead to huge advances in nanotechnology and artificial intelligence.

Its already happening its called the HSE and the welfare state. With computers advancing at current rates, and humanity's alarming tendency to destroy itself, would/could a computer decide to simply stop humans from doing anything?

I should have added thatI think World war 3 would pretty much end humanity, hence the use of or.
