My sister died last Christmas and earlier this year a friend bought a star for my brother-in-law named after her.

He is interested in knowing where this star is so I thought I would ask on here.
Does anyone know of any websites where you can enter the co ordinates and it tells you where your star is?

Thanks.

I know that these named stars are a bit of nonsense but it would mean a lot to him to know where this star is.

Just put the name of the star into google, (the scientific astronomical name that is). In fact post it here and I'll see if it is on stellarium, or any of my other apps.

Download a free program called stellarium. Set your location. F3 to bring up a search window and type the stars name in.

Goodluck. Just ask if you need help.

Many astronomers are very angry about this type of carry on, to be honest. You might as well say, "You see that tree over there, if you give me £XXX you can buy it from me and have it named after yourself".

No you can't - and you can't do it with stars or other objects in space either.

You only bought a crater?

You should have gone the whole hog and bought a full fat "Impact Basin". I own the Mare Imbrium I'll have you know.

They all moved out in 1972. All we have now as neighbours are a some derelict pieces of kit and a few abandoned cars.

What happens if it goes Supernova or becomes a black hole? Do you get your money back?

More for a supernova - refund for a black hole.

Good luck trying to get your money back after putting it in a black hole.

Look on it as a mystery investment. You never know what part of the universe it might all pop out again - perhaps with added interest.

I didn't realise there was a star called 'Royal Bank of Scotland'!

The star was called "Fred".

For many years, people did believe he was a bright star in the financial firmament.

That is a barren part of Virgo. I cannot see any stars there. I am just about to go out for the afternoon so I will have another look this evening.

The only thing that I can say is that it must be bloody dim.
