Are there any meteorologists out there who can explain why the UK is having crap weather, and I don't mean just today, this week this month, I mean in general over the last x number of years. It's depressing, after a winter looking forward to some sun and car related activity to find another shcensoredit weekend or at best bland and overcast sky.

What the hell has happened and is it ever going to change back to what I remember as proper seasons

Ps An answer better that "global warming" would be appreciated.

Its all because my car emits 300 grams of CO2 for every kilometer i drive. I am sorry.

People only remember the good weather days from previous years as that is when we go and do memorable things. We forget the endless grey days.

We live on a small island between a large continent and a large ocean with a major airflow near us (jetstream). UK weather is changeable and always has been.

It's because the UK is where it has always been, so the changeable weather it's always had has continued.

If someone towed it down to the Mediterranean the weather would be nicer and more stable. Even better would be if it were land locked in the middle of a large continent.

The weather in Phoenix is pretty stable, plus the tourists avoid it during summer, so maybe moving there would suit you. Winter in Phoenix is perfect, with the bonus of being able to leave a car outside for decades without rusting.

It's because the North Atlantic Jetstream that brings low pressure weather systems to the UK in the winter and moves north in the summer hasn't been moving north enough over the last couple of years bringing more rain to most of the UK during the summer.

People don't know why it's happening. It might be to do with sea temperature, it might be to do with arctic ice,, it might be natural variation.

Deforestation and having too many humans on the planet are the cause. The weather will not get any better until this is rectified. Any ideas? wink

Thanks
Thats a better explanation than I must have a bad memory for only remembering the sunny days. In the SEast of UK we have had extreme variations over the last 5 years, having lived here for 6 times that (30 years) the snows we have had in the last 2 - 3 years are the worst I have known. Must be getting SAD's just need some nice weather to get out and enjoy the car.

Sorry, but not much of that sentence makes any sense.

There has been an argument / theory that teh warming in some places has resulted in cooling else where because the snow whch would normal reflect the sunlight isn't there.

Must be me then.

This comment is completely throwing me

"Having lived here for 6 times that (30 years) the snows we have had in the last 2 - 3 years are the worst I have known".

What does "Having lived there for 6 times" actually mean?

On the subject of basic weather facts, I've lived in the South of England for 28 years and the worst snows I remember were 1987 and 1990. Temperatures in 1987 were quite a bit lower than they were in our most recent cold snaps.

The last two years have indeed been st. When you have a boat and an open-top car you notice these things! Last year we had just 5 weeks of decent weather, the first being a heatwave at the end of March. This year we've had two bank holidays in May which were nice, and maybe a week or two before that. It's now almost the longest day, and no sign of any sun. Just cloud and cold wind, week afer week.

He said ".... for six times THAT" - ie the 5 years mentioned in the previous phrase, 6 x 5 = 30 years

'fraid so.

He was trying to say that he has lived in the South for 30 years and the last two or three have been the worst he remembers. And that he thinks that weather has become more extreme over the past 5 years. Hence the '6 times that'.

That's better.

Although I don't necessarily agree with his sentiments. As I said we had worse snow and colder weather in 1986, 87 and 90/91 We also had the worst winds ever in 1987.

My garden fence was blown down in about 1996 or 97.

So, recent years have been relatively calm compared to all that.

Of course 1996/7 may have been the year that the winds were no stronger, but the time when your fence finally rotted beyond breaking point smile
